What an interesting and rewarding journey this project has been. When first asked what I thought about this particular bike, sadly knew little about them. Should we buy it and if we do, what then! Well we did buy it and a decision was taken to try and do a project for the forum, and for ourselves. No need for me to elaborate on what transpired along the way, Chris has covered that extensively and kept all abreast of our progress. Fast forward to last week end when the painted panels were delivered and the hours spent putting our project bike together. The immense pride we felt and sense of satisfaction was clear for all to see. The number of HIGH FIVES , lost count couple that with the smiles on our dials, bloody good week end. Would we do another one, in a flash. Right from the beginning Chris had a vision and I think we came very close to fulfilling it, a fun journey culminating in a great outcome. Doesn't get much better. Phil
Hey Chris, if you and your helpers can cram another well done into your heads, well done, it looks great. My only critism would be that you did yours before I have even started mine I'll get stuck into mine soon I hope but I did buy a T500 at the Gatton swap so it may wait a tad longer. A couple of questions if I may, did you do any work to the frame apart from general cleaning. Paint, powdercoat?? What was wrong with the servo that you needed to replace, what was it doing or not doing etc.
Hey Chris The frame was in surprising good nick and a good clean was all it really needed, it was never meant to be a full tilt resto, more a decent clean up and ride it type job. When we had the bike checked out, the powervalve servo wasnt opening fully so after trawling nsr-world.com, I found a few posts that mentioned this occurs and that its either the powervalve controller or the powervalve itself. We ended up buying a servo from a guy in Moss street who is wrecking a few NSR's and the problem is solved. Phil and I are pretty stoked how it looks, we do have a spare MC18 in the garage and on Sunday had decided to move it on, but after taking it foir a quick run, I think this one might be a good candidate for our next project, but instead of trying to bring it back to a factory looking bike, we are thinking that it might be a good candidate for a full tilt Tyga bike or maybe swap it for a RGV this NSR is from - http://www.dreamgate.ne.jp/ from the Tyga Website Cheers Chris Ps- nice pick up on the titan, I had a call from a mate telling me it was there, but by the time we got out to Gatton Saturday morning it was gone. We did have a good look at the T350, but thought $1800 was a bit rich, as was the RGV250 on the trailer with spark problems for $3300
Yep, the powervalves work. I took the NSR250 down today for a RWC and she sailed though with flying colours and now has a plate and 6 months rego. Chris
that rothmans bike looks great always liked those ns400r that honda built not sure if you got them here or not in the rothmans paint
I love what you've done with it Chris, if you do plan on trying to move the nsr on, let me know because I can get my hands on an rgv to swap, I'd really love an nsr in my garage, especially an original one, my next project will be an original zxr250, will try to make a zxr250r, seat cowl is easy, but they had larger diameter carburators and a gearbox with different ratios in 1st and 2nd which will be very hard to reproduce!
The NSR is registered and it really wasnt blowing me away performance wise, it was quick but had a slight heistation at 9,000rpm whihc was bothering me. There is a powervalve on this bike that changes the exhaust port under high revs and didnt seem like it was working, we have replaced the powervalve servo but it still wasnt 100% right. I then pulled the servo controller off the spare bike and hooked it up, when I turned the key on, I heard the servo cycle though.. woo hoo. A quick test ride resulted in smiles all round. I decided that I would have a go at derestricting the bike as they are limited to 45hp from the factory, the restriction is the powervalves doesnt fully open. The MC18 PGM 1 NSR250 is the easiest to derestrict as there is a wire between the PGM and the controller with a plug, all you have to do is unplug the cable, wrap it in tape so it wont earth out on the frame and the powervalve will open up fully under high revs... Test ride done... smiles all round. this one is a keeper !!!!
THE NSR PROJECT Having worked alongside Chris on this bike for sometime and watched it come together as we had planned, it dawned on me that even after getting it registered I hadn't ridden yet. So a couple of weeks ago I got my chance whilst helping Chris sort a few small issues out. Chris took it for a test ride and returned happy that all seemed well with our NSR. OK, my turn. Chris kept saying, you gotta rev it, so rev it I did and found an open stretch of road and away I went. As the revs rose in 2nd to around 7000rpm I received a giant boot up the backside and it just kept doing it in 3rd then 4th. The exhilaration was growing and a smile I couldn't get rid of. Having never taken steroids, I was certain the NSR had, often!!. Have ridden my fair share of bikes over the years, nothing prepared me for this intense exhilaration. This thing HONKS!!!!!! and I kinda want to do it again, SOON.
What do you think of it now you have been riding it for six months? Have you done any track days on it yet?
I love it, the power is infectious, I actually thought about selling it as it wasnt being ridden enough, but I just paid my rego again so I guess Im keeping it. I havnt done any track days on it, more just riding it on weekends and the odd run to work. I thought about modding it abit for more power with some new expansion chambers and rejetting the carbs, but It looks and sounds sweet stock so thats the way it will stay. Anyone in brisbane keen for a track day, I would love to give her a run ?
Hi Kiffsta, You are an inspiration mate, I just bought an MC18 in bits with plans to put it back together and get it back to its former glory. Then I came across this thread Would you know roughtly how much you paid to have your tank painted and stickered? and I would like to get intouch with the guys that painted yours because they did a brilliant job. I am also in brisse. Thanks, and I hope you don't sell it anytime soon. I just came back to a 250 after a k4 GSXR750. There's nothing like em. Cheers,
thanks mate, it was a super cool bike, however I sold it about 4 months ago, It wasnt an ideal daily rider and it just sat there in the garage so it now lives in Sydney with a 2 stroke enthusiast, yes I kick myself every day for selling it... would I do another ... hell yeah, but Im broke at the moment. As for the paint, try www.aceofsprays.com.au , the NSR is up there http://aceofsprays.com.au/2011/11/19/honda-nsr250/, Bob can get you a price to do the paint and decals. Good luck with your rebuild, what part of Brissie are you in ? thanks Chris
kiffsta just browsing the web looking for parts for NSR and saw your reno. Looks amazing and just what Im about to embark on. Would love to pick your brains on the workings of the little Honda as Ive never had one just been a Yam, Kwak and Suz man. Would be grateful of a reply. Oh and Im on northside of Briz.
I havent quite got it yet. It should be on its way north soon I hope. But thanks and will be in touch.
I am keen to see how you get on too Brizfox. I'm currently putting an MC18 back together as well. I am in East Brisbane so not too far away.
