Man, I need to have a look at my pilot screws then, mine is a bit boggy under 4k. 5-6 on take off is better. However depending on how I ride, 180-190ks is my reserve changeover.
Are you sure that would be the pilots? They're idle settings. Wouldn't boggy at low RPM be needle settings?
Don't forget that the pilots influence the mixture throughout the entire rev range, contrary to the "pilot" name. After setting them to 2.5 turns out, the bike is no longer boggy below 8k RPM (below 6k RPM is still iffy), has far more low end torque and once above 10k RPM it starts to really take off. @Grasshopper reports the bike as scary fast after changing the needles and jets, and his settings are lean at the moment.
The other thing u need to do @Linkin is pull the HT leads and caps and snip a couple of mm of the ends and re screw the caps into the new wire ..... and new plugs if u havnt already ..... made a hell of a difference to the grasshopper machine .... a couple of the ends were 'rusty'
Much as the BDST carbs are maligned by all and sundry, they are eminently rebuildable, what can you do with a Keihin when it wears? When this carb was released on the GSX-R750, Suzuki thought it was such a big deal (I assume the flat slides and smooth bore in a CV carb) that they were dubbed 'Slingshot' and promoted as a positive selling point. When functioning correctly they should be a good carb. The double pilot circuit, half is fixed and the other half metered, allows for a lot of fine tuning, but probably creates a lot of sensitivity. Now that the source of the 'chugging' problem has been identified and with the amount of owners now 'fine tuning' their settings I expect that there won't be too many secrets left that cannot be overcome. I plan to make new diaphragm rubbers in both Viton and NBR over the next few months and the prices should be very good (fingers crossed). cheers Blair
Yep its got new plugs, when the engine is in pieces for the cam chain and valve clearance check I'll get them to snip the leads Good stuff
So I have a 5 day weekend starting this Thursday, but instead of going south to VJMC, I will be going north to The Fizzer Factory(tm) Head Office. With 5 days off work and some helpful hands, I hope to sort out the cam chain and do some other misc stuff like identify what carbs are on the bike. My package from Mr. Green arrived today, which will be going on @Grasshopper's bike/carbs. Don't have any more of those Keyster kits yet (payday is next week) but with hopefully another order from Mr. Green (if my carbs are 3LN3/5 and not 3LN6/7 - either way, I still need to get kits for the 3LN6), we will have successfully rebuilt 2 sets of carbs. Once we assemble the Green Team (@GreyImport , @Grasshopper , @Linkin , and perhaps Dr. @Murdo should we get stuck ) there will be many photos, and much consumption of large quantities of beer!
Hopefully the beer drinking comes AFTER you fix the carbs. I can't imagine you'd fix them otherwise lol
To translate from Australian to English: "To put up with these bastards all weekend Ill be having beer for breakfast" I look forward with anticipation to enjoying the company of these good people to such an extent, that I shall start my day with a refreshing ale.
