    picked up the new bike stands last night.. bike people are the best, he's in the middle of a party and is all stay for a beer, you should come and do track days with us, or come to Phillip Island this year, so friendly :)
    I'm collecting the tools I need probably going to cost me the same as paying someone to do the job but I don't want to have to go to the mechanic for every little thing so it'll work out much better in the long run. Still need chain breaker/press tool and a couple other things. Thanks for all the support and advice guys, I really appreciate it!

    That was my plan as well, I figure for the cost of buying tools and learning I can do it at the same price as a mechanic the first time but cheaper every time after.

    So I got started on it today, got as far a getting the rear wheel off and couldn't get the damn sprocket off. Was too tight to get my ring spanner onto the nuts so I tried with the open end and just managed to burr them up even more than they already were... :(
    The rear tyre was nearly ready for replacing anyway so off I went to the bike shop for a new tyre with the ulterior motive of getting some help with sprocket removal. And it worked! Well first I got a lecture on buying quality tools and yes I got my sprocket loosened for me and new nuts to put the new one on, also a lesson in fitting the new chain. He was worried that the place where I bought the joining link didn't know anything about the chain I was putting on besides 520 o-ring chain and said if I brought the parts in he'd check it for me incase its the wrong link.
    Basically I was really impressed and for about 20 minutes of helpful chat and help with a stuck sprocket he's got a new loyal customer, miles apart from the attitude at some other bike shops!

    which workshop was this? - there's three that are good in Brookvale - APW motorcycles, Freedom Motorcycles and the other good 'un is Brian Connors Motorcycles..

    And one which is IMNSHO completely disreputable and to be avoided at all costs - surfside motorcycle garage aka The motorcycle cafe - I do have a a very good reason for the strength of my opinion on these guys

    sockets always as a first resort, 6 point in preference over 12 point, then ring spanner if necessary

    I've been to the cafe once and all I could determine was that the coffee was pretty average - haven't formed any other opinion of them and their mechanical services
