    Guys,

Just trying to get a bit of a history, the FZR250 3LN ('91) bike are they a grey import? been browsing around and just want to check. Seems to be a lot of parts around etc, I'm eyeing one off but don't want to be cornered with something that could require a bit of work for parts/repairs.

Yes, they are a Grey Import. Not too bad for parts.. some new parts harder to get, but we all seem to manage ok.... Go for it! Carbs often need a rebuild, but I got one that had them done already....

Cheers mate... so what are the known problems with this particular model? Carbies mainly? Rebuilding them doesn't exactly put me off but balancing them is a pain in the rear.

Should be able to feel the radiator hoses they would point out what condition the rest of the rubbers are. Obvious leaks and smells. Take a pen torch to check for rust in the tank. Open the seats. If it idles good and throttle response is instant it could be a winner. Lastly if test riding try and make it flood itself. By cracking the throttle on and off.

Unless its a $3000 pristine example u can guarantee it will need an overhaul of some degree

    Frontends are marshmellow.

Like most carbs on any bike they are pigs to get right and x 4 makes it more of an ass ...... balancing is not the biggest challenge

Valves will no doubt need to be done

Ive never had a problem with fuel pumps

If the cooling hoses are split or stuffed your up the creek ..... half of them are unique with differing diameters on each end and no longer available.

But we will soon start a 3rd FZR "renovation" so it cant be too hard.

And when u get it right ... they go like stink

Thanks guys. Huntsman, what do you mean by this? what advantage would that give?

...and if you find one in good condition what is your feel for a fair price?

If at anytime when cracking the throttle while riding it and it chugs It would indicate the needles are being overpowered by the fuel pump and the bike needs Carby work

I'm going out there this evening. I already called the guy and it seems positive. He said he's had it about 3 years, it has genuine kms, new front disks and last service was about 16 months ago. He's a mechanical fitter and says he's been doing minor work himself and major work at a bike place in Thomastown (gave me the name but I didn't write it down). No paperwork though. He's selling because it's been sitting around and he's moved house a couple of times and I suppose it's taking up space and annoying him. He says he starts and runs it regularly (takes it round the block etc) to keep the fluids flowing. Also says no leaks he's aware of, smooth throughout rev range and he said he almost took it for a roadworthy but didn't (as he couldn't justify the time and hassle more than anything else) but doesn't think it will need much (if anything). It sounds promising, reckon I can pick it up for close to $1k which I think is a fair deal. He's happy to let me test ride too which is positive.

The hesitation for me comes from buying such an old bike and just ensuring it's not going to die on me because more than the wasted money and time the sheer hassle would be annoying.

Mate for that kind of money for that bike, I think it's a steal... It just depends on what needs to be done to bring it into the 'reliable' category.. but of course there's always a risk with anything that age. If he's run it regularly, that's a really good thing... I'd buy it, and then go over the usual checks.. brakes, sprocket & chain, general maintenance... It sounds as though there is nothing major wrong with it...

    Its a 3LN3 or newer
As u know from being on these forums its a 25+ yr old bike so anything is possible.

As much as everything he is telling u is maybe correct , don't believe a word of it.

It looks the goods in the pics so that's a good start.

You need the old rego/plate number to check its history

I would offer him $900 so maybe u can get it for a $1000/$1100 ..... here in NSW it costs around $500 to register a bike from scratch.

Don't forget to get a full written RECEIPT

The boss likes it so that's always a good sign ..... :thumb_ups:

i was looking at the bike on ebay earlier, for a $1000, if it starts and runs and looks as good in the flesh as it does in the pictures your on to a winner.

there is an abundance of parts available for these little terrors so i wouldn't worry about been up the creak if something goes wrong...well unless you live in Perth lol.

Grew up in Perth so I feel your pain haha...

I did a PPSR and it came up clear so provided she goes well enough I think it's a good deal. Will let you guys know the outcome.

May need someone to loan me a stock exhaust for rego though... possible anyone? Haha
