    Hello,

This is my first post on the forum. I recently bought a good looking zxr250 as my first bike and thought i had a winner.

Firsts things first, bought a new battery, oil filter, air filter and a few other small things.
I went ahead and did a carby clean and had the bike running! YAY!

I went for my first ride and only made it 1.5km up the road until it started losing power and wouldn't pass 60kmph.. got stuck on a hill... so i tried to bump start it but couldn't and had to push it back.

So today i double checked the vacuums, turned the pilot screw 2.5 times and looked inside the pickup area.. Went to start the bike and only can now hear the solenoid.. I put the battery on charge and waited until it was fully recharged.

Put it back in and still could only hear the solenoid. any ideas? could it be a starter?

My 2008 Ninja 250 did the same thing, it is the starter motor. Give it a good thump and try cranking it after. Source a new/second hand starter

You have the air tubes on the tank, making your bike a ZXR250A model.

    Its definitely a C model

While its not running, pop it into 2nd, and rock it back and forth, then find neutral and try starting it

Simple things first ..... check the leads and connectors/connections from the the batt to the starter etc , including earths

Then take a close look at your RR (regulator/rectifier) under the tank as they are prone to this on the C model ....

    Burnt Toast.jpg

And before spending money on something u may not need ... remove the starter motor and bench test it straight off a battery

Grey i looked at the RR but it looks fine. I tried hitting it with a hammer and bump starting it but nothing happened.. I checked the fuzes and noticed the headlights are not on like they used too.. in my mind thats telling me the battery connection. I'm about to go out and double check the connections again and make sure everything is grounded correctly.

ill keep you guys informed. =)

So todays progress was working out that the battery is 100% fine. I worked my way down the pos cable to the checked the master fuse like you said kiff a there is no power coming out. I'm going to replace it tomorrow and get a new fuse. Should be quite cheap!
    Cheers for the tip!

Haha Kiff has a 6th sense I swear.
The C model comes with the "reg/rec" cooling hoses as well (if they even do that).
I constantly hear about starting issues with the zxr but usually the go to thing is the battery so it's good to see something different for a change.

New solinoid and fuse rocked up today! Went through a wreckers in Sydney to get it! Only 135$ cheaper than going through Kawasaki! Fingers crossed this is the last thing to fix and not the starter motor!

So it worked yay!! But now I'm Absolutely gutted.. Turned the key to a great sign before seeing litres of fuel gushing out of the exhaust! Flooded engine... Now I have to work out this next problem.. Weather I was the fuel cock or if it's the carbies!

It won't be the fuel tap unless someone has modified it like on one of our fizzers.

Adjust the float height on the carbs. Bend the little tang on the float so that it pushes the float needle against the seat sooner. Once you are looking at it you should be able to figure it out

I hooked the tank back up and poured 5L in. I then turned it first click from off. Maybe it was because i should have filled it up then turned the fuel on. I just took the carbs off again, so fingers crossed i can find the cause.

Unplug the tank from the carbs and verify that the fuel tap actually stops fuel flow on the "off" position. If not you have a problem.

Then, run the bike, stop engine & turn fuel tap OFF straight away. Leave it for a few hours and pull off the carbs. If there is fuel accumulating in the ports then it is the float height or needle and seat. Float height is the first thing to adjust, but also make sure that the needle and seat are clear of obstructions.

    • There is no need to change the float height unless the float needle is worn/damaged or a previous owner has set it too rich.
    • Trying to start an engine that has filled the cylinders with fuel can lead to bent con-rods due to hydraulic lock.
    • Remove the spark plugs first before cranking the engine over to flush excess fuel. Ensure that the kill switch is activated so that a spark does not cause a fire.
    • Change the oil because fuel will leak past the rings and contaminate it

The first thing i did was take the spark plugs out, i also got rid of the fresh oil i put into the engine.. i have the carbs off atm and just about to take them apart and have a look to see if any of the measurements have changed. maybe ill get a carby kit or something if their is any damage. ill get back to you guys soon! =)
