Honda CBR250rr MC22 Project (take 2)

Well since last week I have made a point of starting the MC22 daily. Alas the bike seems to dislike early starts and cooler morning??
Cranks over well enough but simply won't start......nearly draining the battery each day......this is BS.
It does eventually start......and will do so no mater how many times I try, next morning same old story.
So today the carbs came off....again!! and armed with all the good stuff I stripped them and cleaned them thoroughly.
Some junk within but nothing that should preclude the engine from starting???
Put everything back together and thought I would test it first.......flat battery
The upside is there is always......tomorrow

Battery is brand new.........and currently on charge
Test for spark....one was poor so before Grey could get to me....I trimmed a bit of the coil lead....perfect!!!
The Honda petcock was broken.......currently using a smic one.....???? don't know.

 

There is one thing missing and I am uncertain what it's roll is and what it does..........can anyone help.
There is a large plastic tube coming out of the carbs facing the engine. Normally there is a rubber hose that has a 90 degree bend and a small canister that contains some sort of filter..........hose and canister are missing......think it connected to the vacuum line?
Any ideas my friends.

---MC22 UPDATE---
Well after a horrid week of draining the battery.....not once but twice and still no closer to getting the engine to start decided to go back to basics.
Mothers day week-end Chris came up and we got everything sorted with the aid of some news tools (carbtune pro)and others.
The carbs that were on the bike originally were designated B, however Chris wasn't overly impressed with these and had brought with him another set designated A......so we swapped them over and got the bike running really well.
That is until the following morning when cold the bike seemed unwilling to start...........but eventually did.
This situation gradually deteriorated to the point where it simply would not start.
By weeks end I was a tad over it, checked the manuals to ascertain that I hadn't missed anything and eventually decided to pulled the carbs off.....AGAIN. Cleaned everything.....AGAIN and re-installed for a test run..............drained the battery.....AGAIN!!!!
Sunday the carbs were removed and swapped with the original carbs and guess what...."Bloody thing roared into life"
Not to tempt fate I went into the garage this morning....hit the button and.....BINGO.....engine started first go
Moral of this story is....nice to have an A but a B suits me fine.

 

MC22 UPDATE
Have not had the greatest time with the bike............carbs carbs and more carbs seems to be one issue after another.
Leaking fuel, blocked ports and the list goes on. So back to the bench, complete strip down again only to discover a few issues not seen prior. Most were quick fixes and time to re-visit the manuals again, a good scan and the end was in sight.
All the time the engine wanted to start but just couldn't get there......was it getting enough fuel, simple answer....NO!!!!
An extra quarter of a turn on the air/fuel mixture and voila.......1st hit of the button and she roars into life.
Ok, she runs real well, little or no hesitation when throttling up.....sounds good and no leaks......life can be good
Also this evening I put the trolley jack under one side of the engine with the bike on the side stand and got the front wheel off the deck, rectified the alignment issue I had which in turn fixed the odd handling, so all in all a big win.
She is done, all we need are some fairings and she be ready for the road. Rewarding to get another back on the road.

 

Woke up this morning and 1st port of call was the garage........hit the button and she roared into life.
Alas my joy was short lived..........15 seconds she stalled and would not start again???????
From a high to a low in under 30 seconds......Phil's nightmare.
"WHY ME" was my thought, got off the bike and looked at the petcock............OFF position
Turned to ON.....waited a few seconds.....hit the switch and she fired straight up
Life can be cruel at times, but final outcome is GREAT, I need a cup of coffee. Long live the MC22!!!!

 

Having had the tank off whilst dealing with the carbs.......simply forgot to switch it back on. Caused a little anxiety this morning.
Happy to say that I've started it at least a dozen times since.........hasn't missed a beat.

 

No, the bike is Chris's and my guess he will probably sell it. Still needs a few bits to finish it off, will be a good bike.
