    Hi everyone,
I purchased a cbr250rr yesterday and a friend suggested I come here and introduce myself.

I'm looking forward to doing a bit of work on this bike and getting her on the road. This will be my first bike and I'm really excited!

At this stage I'm not sure what exactly needs to be done, I do know it needs new fork seals and a polish and a new battery/set of tires. The seller said it was running about 6 months ago before he got his new bike but for $500 I figured I'd roll the dice see how I go.

Looking forward to putting up a bit of a build log as I progress along.

    Cheers,
    Paul

    :welcome: mate

Sounds a good price ........ drain the fuel and put in some fresh stuff

Get an AGM battery .... Motobatt or SSB powersport

As u dont know its past (and u never believe anything they tell u) plan on changing the oil and filter

Look at the brake pads to see if they need replacing and look in the brake reservoirs to see the level and state of the fluid.

The coolant overflow bottle usually indicates the state of the coolant .... brown , dirty , empty, etc

A new set of spark plugs maybe

Check the chain for tension and clean and lube it ..... check sprockets for wear .... if sprockets are worn then chain and sprockets should be replaced all together.

Welcome to the forum, $500 is good value depending on many factors, factors you will discover as you start going through issue's.....if any with your CBR250RR. I have been working on one recently myself and there are many members on the forum willing to assist and guide you (should the need arise ) with any issue's you may encounter.
By the way, what vintage is your bike.......just curious.
For a first bike you should be excited......CBR's are a great bike.
We love photo's here so feel free to post some of your new pride and joy.

I hope you have an ample supply of tools! Have you done work on cars, bikes, boats planes etc before?

First things to do (after taking the fairings off) would be to change the oil, filter, and coolant. Air filter as well. Brake fluid if necessary. Maybe also remove the carbs and drain the old fuel out of the bowls, but 6 months shouldn't be too bad. Make sure you get something 10W-40 or close to that with no friction modifiers - no car oil.

To see if the engine turns over, you can take off the stator cover and rotate the stator with a socket (after removing the spark plugs). If that's good, new fuel & a battery should get it started. New plugs wouldn't be a bad idea, too. Actually speaking of carbs, you should set the idle mixture screws to the correct setting. Screw them all the way in until you feel resistance, then 2 turns out on each one. The control the idle air/fuel mixture. Little brass screw on the exterior of each carb by the float bowl covers.

Other than getting it running, new tyres like you said, but also check the chain and sprockets, plus rear wheel alignment. Might be rooted or even have the wrong size chain and the wrong sprockets. These run a 428 chain with 17 tooth front sprocket and 52 tooth on the rear. Rear wheel might not be straight. Use the chain adjustment notches on the swingarm to determine. You should also check the front & rear brake pads, and measure the brake discs with calipers. Service limit usually about 4mm thick.

Once you get the bike started you should check for leaks of any kind.

Service manuals etc. are available for a $5 donation to help keep the site running.

This should also give you an idea on parts costs: http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/andys-bike-bits-honda-cbr250rr.3789/

If you determine that the carbs need work: http://litetek.co/Carb_Kit_Honda_CBR250RR_MC22.html http://www.motorcyclespareswarehous...k-1075hki-kh-carb-repair-and-parts-kit-4-kits

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, I believe its a 96 (R) model but not sure what the best way to tell is?

First thing I'm planning to do is drain the fuel and put in some fresh stuff and a new battery to see that it kicks over, should I drain the carbies as well or just to start it with a fresh tank? Then do the oil and filters etc, check the chain and sprokets.

EDIT: Scrap the above paragraph, Linkin gave me a good run down of what to do to get started :) I have a little experience with bikes but have a mate who has been riding for years and his father is a bike mechanic so I'll have some backup if needed!

And yeah I figured for that price it'll be a learning experience if nothing else :)

The fairings are a little busted up and missing the odd screw so I'll probably buy a screw kit for the fairings.

A lot of MC22's are imports. From 93-96 they were sold officially by Honda. Earlier models have 45HP, newer ones 40HP. But they all still beat the new shitbox ninja's and cbr's... I had a Ninja 250R.

Best way to check is look up the rego if you know the plate number, or check the headstock for an import compliance plate. Should give you the year of compliance and year of manufacture.

    Example, my FZR

Well I took a look last night, I looked up the rego and its coming up as 1998, obviously that is the import date and not the manufacture date. Also the import compliance plate doesn't give me a year either... So yeah I'm not really sure how else I could find out? It doesn't bother me too much, I'm just curious.

Well you should know which model you own..........reason being it could be a 45hp or a 40hp model, the manuals differ from model to model.

Yeah it's something I'll need to find out before I start any work on it. I'll check the serial number as suggested.

Here are some pictures, the sprocket looks a little worn so will probably grab a new chain and set of sprockets to be safe? The import compliance plate just lists Honda MPE as the importer.

Sorry I couldn't get the upload to work so here is the imgur album: http://imgur.com/a/H8kek Exhaust looks a bit rough and I tried to get a good view of the rear sprocket

I thought both the 45hp and 40hp versions are MC22's?

    Its a 1991 mate, lucky you =) u have the 45hp model.
(i think according to the honda vin decoder)

Actually I am positive its 1991

    according to this source http://www.ehow.com/how_5776052_decode-vin-number-honda-motorcycle.html
the 10th letter is the year.

    According to this source
Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN codes)/Honda/VIN ...
    "Honda year
    VIN Code, Description. D, 1983. E, 1984. F, 1985. G, 1986. H, 1987. J, 1988. K, 1989. L, 1990. M, 1991. N, 1992. P, 1993. R, 1994."

    The 10th letter M means 1991.

(you can buy me a beer one day for being the bearer of good news =)
