Maybe the cam chain has come loose and slipped a tooth?

The CCT is definitely a weak point on these engines, along with the tiny roller chain. Even the standard morse type chain on the other 250's is beefy compared to what the ZXR's have.

Hopefully it's just a stretched chain/jumped timing/worn out CCT and not something worse like a bottom end bearing or anything bent/broken in the top end.

Bugger indeed! Awful way to end your adventure. It does sound terminal, but maybe it's not.

    That is a shame.
Concentrate on getting home safely in the support vehicle for now.
When you are back home, you will need to have a really good look at everything.
Start by pulling the plugs and having a look at their condition. If something has gone a miss internally it will often show on the plugs. Either by way of abnormal colour or damage/strange deposits.

    Good luck.

Yeah fingers crossed it something easy....

It was only making the noise when I had the throttle on so I'm hoping it's not a bearing etc?

But it was that noisy that the guy on the bike behind me said he could hear it (over the usual exhaust noise).

The cam-chain is new maybe 3000km ago, and i cleaned out the auto-tensioner at the same time, but maybe the tensioner wasnt working correctly

It definitely started as a tapping then got much much worse in the space of maybe 2km distance

How expensive am I looking at for a top end rebuild?

It really is too early to give you an idea on cost without knowing all the details.
It might be just something simple or might be a complete engine rebuild/replacement. Without starting to strip things down you just can not tell.
Needless to say that engine noises that start to rapidly get worse, particularly coupled with noticable power loss, are never a good thing.

Fair enough, I'll try and make a start this weekend once i get her back home lol
    Fingers crossed something simple!

I can't say I'm very experienced in the intricacies of engines though ;)

Engine still rotates from the crank with a socket wrench, feels about the same as it always has
I can hear one valve decompressing (1 or 4).

Can't hear any other valves decompressing, not sure if thats correct.

Looking forward to the weekends fixing haha!

I will start a new thread too ;)

    Cheers all for the support!
