I picked up another ZXR250C that had been dropped in an accident, I bought this for spares however Phil and I changed the oil, poured some fresh fuel in, hooked up a battery and she fired right up and the engine sounded very strong so the parts bike idea has gone out the window and we think with the spares we have in the garage, we can rebuild her into a decent bike. After assessing the damage ( fairings, radiator and front wheel)  I dont think it will take much to bring it back to life ,I have almost all the parts (minus the front wheel) to get this bike back on the road.

As this one was dropped and had a low speed slide into a guard rail, I would not feel comfortable using the frame and forks without getting them checked, 90's model Kwakkas are notorious for having weak headstems and I would hate to do a heap of work and pour a heap of $$$ into this project and find out the frame was bent so Im using a spare ZXR250 frame and forks that I know the history of as a basis for this rebuild.

Step 1, will be to get it setup as a rolling chassis, I have dropped my spare set of forks off to be rebuilt with new seals and oil and am now sourcing a front wheel.

Here is a couple of pics of the bike as it arrived. We are going for the stock look, should be interesting to see how she comes out, I will have to get Bob aka paint my ride to work his magic on a budget paint job.

As a follow on from kiffsta's outline of the impending re:build, I degreased the frame that we are to use. then set it up next to the donor bike on a crate. I may well transfer the rear end in one piece and simply disconnect some of the wiring loom, this will save much time and labor.
This will be followed by the engine transfer.
So far so good, will keep posting progress reports.

Ok, so an update on the 1993 ZXR250 Project

We are waiting for the wheels to be boxed and shipped from Sydney, I have ordered new brake pads (front and rear), new plugs, new oil filter and a battery. Word from Jason and Redline Motorcycles is that the forks are ready with new seals and oil.

Phil has going great guns on the transfer of parts from the old bike to the new frame, swingarm and rear end was done Tuesday, last night Phil moved the engine over, while it was out we gave her a good clean and refitted it to the new frame. The gauges, bars, switch blocks and cables were done today and the wiring harness has now been fitted. Phil also cleaned the exhaust and gave them a hit with some heat proof paint which look good.

Over the weekend, we hope to fit the new forks and the old front wheel so its a complete roller and then discussions will strat in ernest  about the paint scheme. Im using my old blue fairings, they are too tired to use, but with some fresh paint the bike should look the goods. I would like to see what can done with the front brake calipers, they look a tad ordinary.

Any suggestions on paint scheme ?

I'd do a dark sorta midnight blue... or maybe something a little fancier...? Anything but the qwaka radioactive green :p

Also- what IS with those weird hosepipe things on the zxr? I never understood why they were there or what they added to the bike... even in terms of style :S

you going to put them back on your project? Or leave them off?

the hose pipes funnel cool air over the voltage regulator and coils, they really dont serve a huge purpose.

Achieved a bit more today, new plugs are in, oil filter done, rebuilt forks are fitted, I will hook up the radiator tonight. Paintmyride aka Bob picked up the panels, after careful considoration Phil and I decided to give Bob creative control of the paint work as long as he works to my budget, Bob has pitched a replica monster paint scheme, sorry Artemis but she is going to be Kawasaki Green.

Work left to do, fit new stator cover gasket, repaint front brake calipers, fit wheels, fit new brake pads and final reassembly.

Looking forward to seeing the final product.

one of the buggest challenges with ZXR250's is finding certain parts, I recently had a sale of ZXR250 parts and sold my very good condition set of air ducts, then 2 weeks later I bought another bike with a set of ducts that were badly perished.

I was trolling ebay tonight and found that a wrecker in brisbane had a pair of NOS ducts, suffice to say buy it now was pressed. This should compliment the new paint scheme nicely

Not much of an update but here goes...

Brake pads arrived, wheels are being picked up tomorrow in Sydney and should be in Brisbane in a few days. Throttle cables have been run, radiator has been fitted and cooling hoses run. Need to replace the hand grips but Im sure I have a set somewhere.  Spoke to paintyourride today, he has a base coat down on the panels and is popping over this week to fit panels and mark out stripes. Coming along nicely and Im still on budget.

I have seen the painted panels and Im excited, as always Bob has hit this one out of the ballpark.  If you need paintwork done in Brisbane, give Bob a call or check out www.aceofsprays.com.au

Im not going to spoil it with half assembled pics, but here is a teaser of the colour.  8)

Still more work to be done, the stator cover received a new gasket yet its still leaking oil, I have a spare cover here so I will try that first. The brake calipers have been stripped and the seals are in a bad way, so I have ordered a set from the UK, I also ordered some new front indicators from the UK as it seemed poor form to stick old dodgy ones on there against the new paint work.

Still a few weeks away from being done, but its getting closer

The tank and other side panel received there final  clearcoat and were delivered today to Phil  its gonna be a great bike this one
i wish id have know you needed indicators mate i got a almost brand new set sat here off a 2007 z1000 they were taken off to fit LED,s

Phil said you was still having issues with the stator leaking if its anything like the z900/z1000 it will be the rubber that wires run thro they shrink with heat and leak even with a new gasket i would replace it  or make sure its oil free and get plenty of sealent on it and were the wire's run thro  it

Today was a good day, took a trailer load of old frames and bits to the tip. With a little more room started cleaning up the workshop.
Got a call from Bob, wanted to know if he could come over and deliver the tank and panels, sure thing was my response.
As per usual, Bob has performed his magic once again, what a gift this man possess.
The tank looks great as do the panels. My first thought was to start putting everything back together however I had an appointment elsewhere. Think I'll wait for Chris to return from Sydney before re assembly starts.
This bike is going to look HOT, we are still waiting for some parts to come in. It won't be long.
                                                                  Cheers  Phil

Progress on the green machine has been rather slow while waiting for parts to arrive from the UK. My front brake caliper seals did arrive, however they were for one caliper only, so a 2nd set has been ordered. I have also been working on the calipers and have stripped them back to bear metal and applied a coat of black caliper paint, they look sweet and once the seals arrive I can finish the brakes.

Big afternoon spent on the ZXR250, front brake calipers stripped again, painted and rebuilt with new seals, chain back on and a few other bits, I went for a run up the street and she isnt too bad, just needs the carbies balanced. I just need to find the speedo cable as well as that is missing and fit some indicators, the ebay store I bought them have just shipped a 2nd set as the first ones didnt arrive.

    heres some pics

Had a reasonable day doing finishing bits.

1 fitted the front indicators and got the wiring sorted. Hard to imagine but they
      worked OK.
2 got the chain back on and fitted the new link, as the old one broke. Got the chain
lube out and got her lubricated.
3 tightened up all loose bits, attention to clutch lever that was loose. Lubricated bike
      and tidied up
Last remaining bit to finish the bike will be bottom end of fairing. Have to find bolts.
Not far off finishing. Must confess she is looking good. Hope to finish soon.
