What is the recommended oil to use if not motul 5100? I have looked everywhere and not found much. I believe 10-40w semi synthetic yea? But not the same as car oil? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

many of the guys here use Caltex Delo400 - it's a diesel oil, however it's very very good spec and perfectly suited to motorbikes, their wet clutches and transmissions, the entire discussion surrounding using diesel oil is a long one - there;s a thread on here somewhere

Most modern car engine oils have friction modifiers which may make your clutch slip. They also (because they are just an engine oil) do not have the shear strength required for gearboxes and will loose the 'slipperyness' of the additives as they are 'chewed' up by the gears. The Delo 400 is used in tractor transmissions and hydraulic systems where high shear loads are required.

Basic message is use good quality Diesel/Mixed fleet engine oil and change at regular intervals because it's not going to empty your wallet doing so.

Not dissing on Full Synthetic Oils, they do have advantages in sustained extreme temperature conditions, basically conditions encountered upper echelon racing engines, however these benefits just won't ever be realised in our bikes

More engine wear is attained through dirty fuel and air than by using the wrong oil.
I just chuckle at those using those silly little pod filters, or even 'open bellmouths' where and grit in the air goes straight into the intake. :lolsign:

Delo 400 is good stuff. They use it in road trains and B doubles if that's any indication as to the kind of abuse it takes. Granted they can have about 60 litres of the stuff in the sump, but the gist of it is that it's a high quality semi-synthetic base that keeps is rated viscosity longer.

Have a read of this blog below, well worth it.. Variants of Delo 400 (low emissions stuff) are listed there, but not the one we use.

Thanks everyone for yr awesome valuable info much appreciated. But I have bit the bullet and bought a 4litre of motul 5100....$64 which I didn't think was bad. Gonna do my oil and filter today and hopefully stop my clutch slipping. Not sure whether I should pull my clutch plates out first and clean them tho??

friction modifiers from car oil will be the source of clutch slip, once you've changed it out it should clear up and start working properly
