Hi guys, any zxr owners ever have an oil pressure switch go on them? The oil light wont come on when the ignition is turned on, but if I ground the wire onto the engine it works and lights up the bulb

It will look something like this on the inside .... unscrew it and see if that opening on the switch is full of crud

I cant remember off hand where it is on the motor but obviously lean the bike or wateva to stop oil pouring out

Have taken it off and cleaned it but still not working, will try again though, im guessing there should be slight movement inside under oil pressure to make a connection but it seems already seated down in there which could be the problem

Soak it in some petrol or kero

I think you answered your own question... bulb not working unless you ground it... sounds like a dodgy ground going to the bulb somewhere. Have a look at the wiring diagram and check the ground for the dash lights

Isn't the oil pressure switch the ground ?
Eg when it get's pressure it goes open circuit

Have you tried it with degreaser etc in it and blowing into it with a blowgun from a compressor?
If there is a bit of dirt or whatever stuck in between the contact and the body of the pressure switch it might be stuck until you put some pressure into it

It's not an oil level switch is it, low oil ?

Yes that's what i thought too. Have tried degreaser, petrol and air compressor, prodded with a toothpick and theres plenty oil in the sump, ive let it idle and warm right up even to see if that would help, followed the wiring loom along it all looks good from what I can see

Megazip have them in stock if you need a new one. Although it may also be a standard Kawasaki part.

Yeah, that's a pretty standard part, so any Kawasaki dealer should be able to supply. Just need to give them part number.

Got a 2nd hand oil switch today, put it in and it works and lights up, hooray, sometimes 25yo parts decide there just had enough. So my curiosity got the better of me and I decided to find out why and how that would happen by slicing it up and looking inside, not much can go wrong only the rubber washer by the looks of things, which when perished enough wont spring back keeping an oil light on or flickering, or becomes brittle and hard from heat like mine & wont allow enough spring compression to make proper connection
