    Hi Everyone,
I am from Perth WA and have the ignition coil cooked up twice in last 3 months.
Any insight on what could be causing it? It was running perfectly yesterday and then all of a sudden i found only 2 cylinders were firing. The CDi box was changed with an after market one only 3 months back. Any advise would be appreciated.
    Terry

    :welcome:

I had a zeal not long ago and the voltage regulator packed it in. It's located under the right hand side cover below the rider's seat. Do a charging system check with your multimeter. If you see over 15 volts the regulator has failed and must be replaced ASAP.

When you replaced the ignition coil did you also replace the spark plug cap if it didn't come with one ?
What brand is the new TCI box , do you have a link for it ?

Well the ignition coil was original yamaha but was a pre- used from the wreckers. The mechanic changed the spark plugs but not the cap. I think the caps are good.
Is it the voltage regulator which is the issue?

I suspected the voltage regulator as well. Will the Yamaha dealer would have the voltage regulator for such an old model or do I have to go on eBay to get one.

Is your battery starting the bike ok still?
Are any of the light bulb's blackened ?

The spark plug cap's can be unscrewed from the lead's, use a multimeter to check them
Set the meter to 20,000 Ohm's (20K Ohm's), put a lead from the meter to one end of the cap on the metal contact point inside and the other lead into the other end.
You should get a reading of 10,000 Ohm's (10K Ohms) or very close to it

Best off getting a multimeter on the battery and read the voltage, should be over 12.6v before you start the bike.
When running it should be somewhere between 13.8v and 14.4v maximum

The one on the zeal is the same part used one lots of Yamahas from the era. Part number 47X-81960-A1.

If your charging voltage turns out to be low, first thing to do is clean and sand your battery terminals and main earths on the engine/frame and re-check. If your charge voltage is still too low you need to do a check on the stator.

    Welcome.

My bike is an oldie that was made from 1990 to 1997, but I can still get almost everything (except paint, which is infuriating, but anyhoo...) through a genuine dealer. For a price. That price is sometimes okay, but often very, very bad (e.g. can get compatible fork & dust seals for about 1/4 the OEM cost). They also run on their own time frame - 3 months for one particular part. So, it can be done, if necessary, and at a premium in terms of both cost and time.

It's definitely worth looking for quality third party suppliers in my (admittedly short) experience.
