I'm a fish outta water whe, but I managed to get my old FZ250 Phazer out of the old mans shed that I use to ride some 20+ years ago. Rego on hold and only had time to wash the dust off. Have a couple of mates guiding me through the do's and don'ts so its going be a long project as can't seem to find much info except with this group.
So here is my dirty 1986 FZ250 Phazer 1KG 1HX

Rare beast and all told, a little dusty, but not rusty and not too shabby looking - predessor to the FZR250 2KR, so most of the mechanical aspects should be very similar

Thanks, it was a lot of fun back in the day. There is definitely a bit of difference. Chassis a 1KG that I've seen so far, none of the FZR deltabox stuff will fit. Engine will have the shorter rods for higher revs? I did blow the engine back in 1998 and Mechanics took for ever to get it back. Would of been the whole FZ & FZR thing.
Carbs should be the same, will have to pull them out and have a measure up.
It might become a Frankinfizzer hybrid FZ$.:headbang: :D

Longer rods are for higher revs.

FZR250 2KR -> 3LN got longer rods, so subject to verification, I would expect your conrods to be 80mm eye to eye length
I've recently been trawling through FZR400 specs for the period, and that bike started out as the FZ400
Some changes took place during the FZR400 development also, which mirror the FZR250 development.

Rod length doesn't so much affect revs, for the same stroke, longer rods rev higher more happily, but it's also friction reduction.

Carbs were actually better on the 2KR, and I suspect that yours will be the same as on the 2KR - Yamaha went backwards in that respect and it took them quite a few years to rectify the mistake - the needles are sloppy in the slides and wear the emulsion tubes excessively on the early 3LN's: 3LN1, 3LN3 and 3LN5
3LN6 and 3LN7 have better needle retention mechanisms to reduce emulsion tube wear.

That bike in excellent condition [restored a little] just might qualify as collectible - there cannot be many of them left out there

So got out there and pulled a few fairings off to see what it was like. Now know why it was so rattly all those years ago. Glad I watched a thread on here about plastic welding, so many tags gone. Next week I will get the tank out to clean and let the CRC soak a few of the screws.
Light surface rust which I might just give a quick tidy up to keep it at bay, just until I know its gunna go. Got the air filter out. Seen better days. :drinks: I've done enough for a Sunday.

Well Carbi is out. Seized as suspected and needs a really good clean down. Have Repco in my town in NZ. Any suggestions of which brand? SCA, CRC, Repco branded?
I'm thinking I'm not that mechanically minded enough to take a carburetor fully apart. Will take the bowl off and see how really bad it is.
Might get it to a bike shop to be pulled apart and put back together... it's starting to worry me.

Any carby cleaner will do ..... get a can of Inox and spray all the outside and clean them up a bit .... and if u mean stuck as in the throttle/butterflys moving then that may help
The black things are slides ... put your finger in the cutaway and push them up , let go and they should spring back

Take off a bowl and that will usually tell u the state they are in

Unless you can find a specialist old school carby guy then taking them to the local bike mechanic is not a great idea ..... half of them wouldnt know a carby if they tripped over it.

Its not hard to do ... just have to be meticulous and organised

    They have JIS screwheads

Bunged up in and outlets with some rags and insulation taped it. Broke out the CRC556 and brushed it up to get ride of some of the gunk. Went to Repco and the guy up-selled me to Penrite carb cleaner, only $5 between them all. Got 3 out of the 4 to blow right through the main jet? Butterfly's loosened up with a little soak, moving good now. Got the slides to move, 1 and 3 are popping up and down almost instantly. 2 and 4 are now lodged up. Guessing that's he next part of pulling apart lol.
Put the bowls back on and rags in, placed it in a bag and will have a better look at it next weekend.
Before and after the spray up.:dance2:
