cant help myself another bikes followed me home , its a 1980 xs250 with xs400 forks , dropped it in to a shop for the rwc on the way home , hopefully only a few minor things if any to pass , motor compeatly rebuilt 5 yrs ago and about 15000 kls ago and huge amount of parts ie spare barrels/ heads / new rings /coils etc etc ... non original paint job and a cafe racer style seat (with the hump at back) ...5 months rego ... cant understand yamahahas thinking at the time , these were yamaha first 4 stroke smaller cc bikes but they were put out as 250 / 360 and 400 .. why put out the 360 and 400 instead of just the one size , also some of the 3 models were kick start only and others of the same yr were both kick and elect .. cant see the logic ... they are a heavy bike for their size and not real fast but then im getting heavier and slower as well , top speed is suppose to be 82 mph new so should be still ok for h/way use and 96 for the 400 , should be a good stable mate for my xs650 .. and before anyone asks sorry no photos as dont own a m/ph and my camera is on the blink .. lol dont know where im going to put it .. might need to build another shed .. lol

rode it home from the shop after getting the rwc , (was first ride since buying it as test ride was up and down the st on flat ground) way way underpowered even for what it is , only managed to touch 100kph couple of times and had to down gears at the sight of a hill , a lot of compression even without putting the gauges on it , motor is quiet and sounds healthy so might have to go looking , at the moment guessing carbs but only guessing , still has the original cv carbs , anyone here had any experience with these xs250s as could save me a lot of time / money and mucking around , also what would be a common carb conversion without going to the cost of a set of new mukuni round slide carbs

I had a super nice original XS 400 back in the day's , I'm afraid to say it was a heavy bike and the power plant way under powered for the job in factory trim.
Would be interesting to see if better carbs would make any difference to the performance.
Wonder what a Dyno run would yeild in better tune V's performance on the stock carb's , no doubt it would cost a bit.
But the power to weight is still against you.

definitly not a race bike but the 400s were a lot more powerful in comparison , not expecting a great deal from it but should definitly be better than this , with the xs650 the vm 34s make a huge difference but a new swap over kit for the 250 is almost 600 bucks .. almost the value of the bike , wondering what other carbs might be better and swap over without to much trouble that i could pick up 2nd hand .. mukuni recommends a vm30 in round slides , otherwise a carb rebuild with new diaphams may be in the future , also has electronic ign , might check that he got the right one

cant find a carb kit for it so rang yamaha ... no carb kit but new bowl gasket 60 ea , new needle and seat 22 ea , back order from japan... new diaphrams from else where 100 pair , vm30 carbs may finish up the cheaper option as get every thing in the kit , cables / air cleaners etc etc , looked every where and cant find a carb kit anywhere , bs 32cv carbs are common on other bikes as are the kits but would mean all most replacing every thing internal ie jets etc ... ahhhhhh already $240 in the hole for the starter motor and starter clutch repair kits, starting to turn into a exie cheap bike , any suggestions on the carb kit would be great
