I have a 1990 3ln fzr250. It won't start with the kickstand down even in neutral. It only starts with the kickstand up.

    Any suggestions???

Obviously something to do with the side-stand kill switch. Perhaps when it was installed it wasn't installed correctly and thus won't start in neutral. Or perhaps whoever installed the switch was a ducati rider: I believe all Ducati's are usually set up like this - the stand must be up (i.e. you must be sitting on them) before it will start.

The options that you would have are (from easiest to most difficult):
    1) live with it (but that can be a pain if the bike needs to warm up a bit before riding)
    2) You can perhaps disable the side-stand switch entirely
    3) Try to work through the electrics and figure out what needs to be done to allow it to start in neutral...

does your neutral switch work??? - the sidestand and neutral switch work in conjunction with each other.

    Neutral and kickstand switches

Thanks Dave and Boz for your suggestions so far.

I have checked through a fzr400 manual and noticed that if my neutral switch wasn't working then my neutral dash light wouldn't come on when in neutral. My neutral light on the dash illuminates when in neutral so would it be fair to rule out the neutral switch??

I may have mislead myself drawing that conclusion though?

Not sure how the start/run circuit is wired but, presuming it is controlled from the CDI, the only other thing I can think of would be the CDI unit or the wiring to it from both of those switches.

Something i've come to realise with alot if not all of the FZR's & CBR/ZX2R's floating around with a few years behind them and even more k's... is that they have been patch repaired so many times they no longer perform exactly how they were built.

My guess is that the kickstand switch may have died somewhere in the 15 years since it was built and has been replaced on the cheap by any kickstand switch / microswitch a mechanic (or backyard grease monkey) could get his hands on. Check the behaviour of it though.

Start the bike in neutral with the kickstand up.
    Push the kickstand down.
    What does it do?

If it kills the ignition as soon as you move it more than half way down... i'd say they've replaced the kickstand switch with a 'sensor-up' one. If it doesn't cut out at all... then eeek im outta ideas.

I usually sit on my bike and just look around whilst letting it warm up... so i don't see why it should be THAT much of a problem. But hey, enough time, effort & money will fix anything. ;)

    Or will frustrate you enough to make you choose to spend that $ on a new bike... <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

Thanks for everyones suggestions as I have solved the problem.

My mate just purchased a 3ln FZR250 a couple of days ago so we had the opportunity for a bit of trial and error.

The problem was a small black box just inside the rear left fairing. Seems to be quite a complex relay. According to the FZR400 manual this would be called a "Starting Circuit Cutt-off Relay".

    Thanks again,

    Donas

what was the problem - was it just wired incorrectly? Was it not working properly for another reason?

The relay was faulty, had to be replaced
