Project Winter Project Thread: 1991 MC22 from New Zealand

    This is my first MC22, I have actually owned it since September after I convinced a very nice Kiwi on Facebook Marketplace to let me blindly PayPal them a bunch of money and all they had to do is drop the bike off at a shipping company. Yesterday, a large box showed up at my workshop. I was greeted with this gem which you would never know spent 45 days on a ship then 2 weeks on a train. At the moment, it has a dead battery, coolant which I am pretty sure has never been flushed but only topped up and a small fuel leak that I believe is coming from the T fitting between the carbs.

    I intend on rebuilding this bike completely (short of rebuilding the engine), effectively, if it is rubber or plastic, it is getting replaced, carbs are being rebuild, valve shims checked. Going further, it will be getting a Brembo 19RCS master cylinder, Racetech suspension front and rear, stainless steel brake lines and will be returning to its original black silver and gold fairings.

    It is very complete and technically ready to ride. However, some part of her are pretty clear they are 30 years old and need some TLC. I am grateful for the premium membership? Is there a place I can donate to support the site? This site has already been a wealth of information in this journey.

    Slowly tearing into the bike and I found my first problem I have to solve. The water pump appears to be leaking, looks like the gasket has failed. Lots of rebuild kits on ebay, anyone have any experience with a good one?

    Just be careful replacing the front master cylinder.

    19 RCS is for fixed calipers, the one you want for these bikes that have sliding calipers is a 15 RCS

    That makes sense and appreciate the feedback. Brembo makes it about as clear as mud as to what is appliable to what.

    Small update: Stripped the bike down and started working through the coolant system. At the point where I need to carbs out and was simply puzzled as to what the best way was to remove them.

    If they have been there a while, a hot air gun can soften the rubbers some but you may still need to have a lever (wood or metal) to get any purchase against the carb bracket to remove them.
