Thrift. Simple. The difference between a CBR and an FZR is probably $2000 at least. FZR's are much cheaper, post 1990 have dual front discs & EXUP and only 2hp difference between the CBR. On a 15 year old bike that means it's basically up to a) the condition of the bike and b) tuning of the bike and there's no way to tell which one is faster.

FZR's will give the CBR's a run for their money at half the cost and they look just as good. people have asked me if it's a 600

X2R's are pretty expensive too. The Suzuki's are just slow ;-)

Although, CBR's will hold their value so if you want to get a CBR go for it. FZR's aren't too bad on losing value. Thing is, if you drop your new CBR the value drops significantly, where as if you drop the FZR no big deal it wont lose that much.

The EXUP does come on some of the models pre 1990. I have a 1988 2kr with the exup. I have heard that there was 2 models of the 2kr. One with exup and one without exup.

Check this page out: http://www.my-x15.net/fzr250/FZR_INFO.html

All bikes models 3hx and later have exups (apparently). The exup helps with low-end power, but to be honest I never found it a significant increase (I disabled it for a while). It mostly helps when commuting with lots of starts / stops as it gives you more usable power at sub 8000 revs. After 8000 there isn't any difference with or without exup.

Because the FZR gives you heaps of problems.

You will soon learn what makes a bike tick, how to fix numerous problems, learn to adjust, fix one problem gain 3 more, impress your work mates and friends with your knowledge of the exup system, carbies, and the words "Too Lean" and "too Rich", become "Mr Google" the worlds best internet and phone user trying to find parts for the god damn thing, and become the best at home mechanic and the worst bike rider as you spund 80% of your L's and/or P's fixing the thing, then you finally get an unrestricted licence, sell the FZR, buy a hypersports bike, because mechanically you know your sh*t, take it out for a spin, go around the corner, open the throttle all the way in 3 nanoseconds (because the FZR did it) Tank slap down the straight, and get bucked off!!!

OR

Become really poor because you were too scared to try to fix it yourself and took it to a mechanic who robbed you blind.

So the FZR250 is the best learner bike available. Because all the others are pretenders, not contenders.

FZR's are like the other 4-pot-screamers without the asshole tax.
The downside is that your gonna spend a bit of time working on it - so it all depends; if you want a weekend blat toy that you never worry about other than getting it serviced by your local dealer/ripoff merchant, buy one of the others... if your after something to help you learn, as you ride it (and fix it)... buy a FZR

Either way, your on an FZR site asking if you should buy an FZR.
Duh!

I dont think that the fzr is really that much more unreliable than a cbr. Ok there are definetly a lot better condition cbrs than fzrs around, but thats more down to abuse. If you find one in good condition and maintain it, it should still last a long time.

Dont forget it is 15 years old..and so are the Cbrs, so it is inevitable that things will go wrong. Just hope they are small.
