I was riding home from uni the other day and had the bloody closest call I've ever had with a car. I'm used to covering the brakes and using the width of the road to cover my own ass and generally being alert to other drivers but this was the first time I had ever thought about what my next move was going to be after the collision, as in I was preparing to hit.

Luckily it didn't come to that but by God I've never had moment like that before.

I was riding over a crest into a little dip which then banked upwards and to the right, there was a stop sign on the left. I saw this guy nose out, nope he hadn't seen me yet, covered brakes, began braking and then he just went and I jumped hard on the brakes, locked the rear and slid for what seemed like age. I stopped directly in the path of cars turning right out of the stop sign, and barely missed him.

I took some photos today and measured my skids, approximately 20m of rear wheel lock. F##########k me.

DSC_0690.JPG can't really see it well but I fish tailed a bit and somehow managed to keep it upright. I was pretty close to dropping the bike and bailing off

The same if not longer haha. But yeah this was completely new to me, I felt like I was going to hit the car and was thinking about how I should land and all that. And yeah the guy was nosing out, nope hadn't seem me yet, then bam he just went and that's when I locked up the brakes I think.

My rear tyre felt like it was on ice.

Close call mate. Closest one I ever had (apart from stacks that were my own fault) was when I lived in WA and used to work in the stone quarries. I had an old trail bike I used to ride to work. The last turn was a right turn off a road with a 100km/hr zone. I was sitting behind a tip truck waiting to turn when the tip truck turned in front of a car doing well over the speed limit coming the other way. The car coming the other way just swerved around the truck and then locked up when he saw me behind. I tipped the bike on its side and gunned it. Lost the bike and we both ended up off the left side of the road in the gravel. The car skidded off the road and hit a tree and the driver copped some injuries. If I had been looking any other way than straight ahead I would have been a goner that day, no bones about it.

My first thought also ...... 140 and full rear brake?

Just reading up on 'emergency braking on a motorcycle'

    This was interesting .....

    Do: Progressively Squeeze The Lever

Starting gently and working up to max pressure will transfer the motorcycle’s weight to the front wheel and compresses the tire, expanding its contact patch and increasing its grip.

    https://rideapart.com/articles/dos-donts-emergency-braking

Just get a Fizzer ... you learn not to panic front brake on them as it will dive and toss u over the bars .....

Close one ere Edwardo, glad you made it OK.
In NSW we don't have roads, just a series of interconnecting potholes.

just reading qld department of transport motorbike crash statistic reports. t intersections where someone pulls out , like in your case, is the most common accident.

    Glad you're alright mate.

I've gotten into a habit of dropping speed when approaching intersections like that if there are cars. Speeding up again is a small price to pay compared to a long fishtail... or worse...

glad your safe- think for the idiots as they are the ones who will terminate you without a thought- slow down for any intersection and crests.

Glad that it was only a close call. Practise emergency stops with your front brake. I can't tell you how important this is.
The rear does next to nothing. In an accident situation braking can buy you some time, but not much. The rest is what you were already doing, planning your accident. The choice between evasive action, lock the rear and lay it down, or the superman jump. Sometimes those morons will just freeze dead in front of you and wait for the collision.
