Right i have my mot on thursday, bike is running fine, but when i select a gear it cuts out, I've tried with the stand up and tried adjusting the clutch but it hasn't done this before and even though its been standing for a while it was fine last time. It is a definate stall the only things I can think it is is clutch adjustment or the side stand, can someone please confirm if mine has a cut off switch to the stand if so where it is as I can't see any wires.
Also the thing i'm worried about is this lever adjustment thats in the engine according to the 400 manual, when sat on the bike the left side down by the gear lever there is a round rubber bung, under this there is supposed to be a locknut with a screw inside, now i can see a locknut on thread but there is nothing inside, no screw just a bit worried i'm missing it!
can someone please have a look at theirs and let me know, mines a '87 2KR

thanks a lot, wont get very far to the mot station at this rate!

Never seen it (clutch lever switch) but I presume you will need to take the lever off to see it. Check the wires and contact points at the side stand too. (see pic).

The more I think about it, I would think it would be to do with the side stand. If when you go to put it into gear it stalls without transferring power to the wheel, then my guess is its the side stand. If it was the clutch lever switch, then it just wouldn’t turn over or do anything when you where in gear and have the clutch out. If (yes just one more if, make that two) you put it in gear and you get power to the wheels (i.e. bunny hop), then you need to get acquainted with the friction point theory or you have some more serious mechanical problems.

Thanks thats a great help i'm going to have a look as soon as I get in from work I just couldn't see a switch there but looks like its quite well hidden, looks like there is a relay for that as well so another possibility. As you say I really don't think its an actual clutch thing as it really clunked and its definately going into gear so it has to be something like that, i'm not much good with electrics so hope its something easily fixed otherwise i'm going to be hard pushed to get a new bit for Thursday last time she was running i rode her down the road so got into second but the battery had had it! mind you this was 2 years ago but still it worked fine then and gear change was pretty smooth. I really don't think the bike has been ridden much if at all since it was imported so be really surprised if its anything major. I'll give you an update this evening thanks.

an update

well I sorted that problem out, the clutch plates were pretty stuck together and pretty worn so I've had to fully adjust the cable and it bites really far out, I took her for mot she rode really nicely and didn't fail on much at all i was really impressed seeing as the time she has been off the road, but the head gasket has gone so thats another set back! anyway at least she will be all sorted in a couple of weeks and we can go have more fun

Good to hear almost everything is back on track. Sounds like you will have is sorted in no time. I was following the saga over at the brotherhood. Short of the side stand it was bound to be a clutch or gearbox issue. I once had the same thing happen to an old car, in the end we just slowly towed it till the plates gave way. For me I find these kinds of setbacks make it all the more sweeter when you get out on the road, although it is nice when things just work for a change .
