unusually rare lightbulb i think

    i went to get an new head light bulb for my 1992 Yamaha fzr 250 3ln yesterday and tried the local general auto shop repco and after half n hour of fluffing around and cataloge searching they didn't have it let alone find it so i tried a different shop of the same caliber but no luck there either so i went to the local bike shop in town surely they'd have it i thought. nup. they couldn't help either so the guy there said go to the big electrical automotive store over the way pretty much if they don't have it then nobody does. the guy there was very knowledgeable rattling of the name of the thing b4 i even had walked 3 steps in the door lol. he searched 3-4 catalogs coming close with ones that had bigger connection prongs on them but not the exact one an finally guessed it was maybe a cheap Chinese rip off. the only thing its got on it is KOITO JAPAN 12V 55/40W (working voltage with high beam and low beam wattage respectively) there's nothing written on the connector on the wiring harness either. i hate going to dealers that's why i haven't tried Yamaha there always darer than everyone else I've found.

    Could someone check there's for me so i know i'm not the odd one out please.

    na its alright thanks anyway dude. im a kiwi. i just need to know what everyone else has i really need to know who sells them cos that would solve my problem. never know someone else might have the same prob too so i might be able to help them out. was thinking of cutting the whole fitting off and wiring in a brand new far more common type maybe slightly stronger wattage 5w or so but ill wait me thinks

    On the 2KR, The original globes are 35w and the lamps use a P45T base H4 globe. Don't know if this is the same as the 3LN

    Hella have a 55/60w lamp - 8GJ 004 173-121, which is a H4 12volt 60/55watt lamp with a P45t base.

    thanks a heap dave, would you or anyone happen to know if upping the wattage like the one you quoted would do anything unexpected or unwanted side effects to the electrical system or battery that i need to know about.

    The only downside is that the alternator does not put out enough charge at low revs to keep the battery charged. Using higher wattage lamps makes it slightly worse.

    Realistically, under normal riding conditions, it does not make much difference.

    On my 2KR I found the actual wiring is not heavy enough to make the higher wattage lamps run at full brightness, with losses caused by the resistance of the wire.

    Practical alternative is to use a couple of relays and heavy wire direct from the battery to power the lights. Use the old headlight wiring to control the new relays.

    My current bike (Suzuki SV650) has lights that are about twice the lights on the FZR

    narva also make bulbs for these both original wattage and higher. have 60/55s in mine wires are handling it ok.
