riding the ZxR through town recently, getting a big "clunk" noise in low gears with the engine under load....

checked the chain and sprokets... ok.

but now im thinking since the obvious was ok, the problem may very well be my gearbox......:help:
    - might drop the oil through a magnetic parts tray and see if theres any nasties
could even be a crank bearing on its way out:idk:
    - put a torch down my intake runners too, looks like some oil has settled on top of the valves in cylinders 3/4
need new spigots...... and valves just to be safe...
been chewing some oil too, probably needs new piston rings/scraper.....
i think its time to start sourcing parts for that engine rebuild i have always wanted to do!

Engine rebuilds on old bikes always worry me. What will I find? Will any of the studs snap while disassembling the engine. Has some ham fisted clown gouged any of the gasket surfaces in the past? I was a bit worried with the NSR as when I took off the barrels there was a helicoil installed in each one. Luckily the rest came apart OK. It's good doing the work though and there is nothing like the feeling of riding an old bike in it's best running condition since it left the factory.

Couldn't agree with you more, such are the trials and tribulations of restoring old bikes.
Think Forrest Gump got it right, like a box of chocolate, you never know what you're going to get!!! We think of the worst and hope for the best and I think we must be into pain? The finished product makes it worthwhile. :thumb_ups:

For me it is the sense of achievement that repairing/restoring old bikes gives, then the feeling of pride when riding know that I did it all myself. :D

did about 300km's on the zxR yesterday over mt. mee, glorious and nobi..... that clunking seemed to have sorted itself out, bike ran like a champ with the new plugs and carby bits.

still not convinced, will be interesting to see if any metal shavings come out of the sump

time to start sourcing out parts for the engine!:thumb_ups:

rear shock + C/D model swingarm. (possibly the rear brake caliper too assuming the mounting is different)

damn adjusting bolt has completely busted off on the right hand side of the swingarm, might need that mechanism for future chain adjustments :lolsign:
