    hey guys,
i'm just wondering if anyone could tell me on how to test the thermo fan and if anyone has a wiring pic from a manual or know where i could find it,

my thermo is not working at all and was getting close to killing the motor with heat in the M5 tunnel in sydney last friday. the radiator and resivour tank are full of fluid. i had a look but i'm not too sure on where the wires are actually going.

any help would be much appreciated

I know you can test the switch by taking it out and heating it up over a stove...and checking the resistance with a multimeter. Though when my thermofan switch went, I just took the bike round the block and let it idle till it got near the red
if the fan doesn't come on u know u got problems. If you still not sure its the thermoswtich...just hardwire the fan to see if that works

"almost" is typical of the fzr250 (and yamaha's in general) in my experience (I have experienced this on 2 fzr250's, a trx850, and my current yzf750). The fan on my old fzr 250 would turn on when the temp gauge reached maybe 5 mm before the red. Then the fan would turn on and all would be forgotten. My yzf gives a little more margin (when it reaches 90 degrees fan turns on, red zone is at 100 degrees).

You may still have a problem (always worth checking), but I thought I would let you know that what you describe may still be normal...

yeah well i normally go on good runs without traffic like out to picton and back into campbelltown through appen, nice little run

but when i ride in th city it goes absolutle nuts so this weekend i might have to play with the thermo this weekend

the temp gage was from 3 or 4 mm away from the red, so i hope i can do something.

    hope this might help

    1. check the fuse for the fan. check also the fuse leads
    if broken>replace (5amps)
if it still serviceable> ckeck procedure 2

    2. raise your fuel tank and locate thermo housing (you will see the thermoswitch tapped on it)
connect the two probes that leads to the thermoswitch. or ground the other wire aside from black wire. turn the ignition key to on position.
if the fan works then your thermoswitch is broken>buy one or replace it with a toggle switch so you can manually operate the fan if the temp goes near redline.
if the fan stil not working> check procedure 3

3.remove the fan and connect it directly to the battery.
if the fan still not working > replace fan.
if the fan works then you have problems with your wiring> start troubleshooting the wiring for looseness or improper grounding

hey guys. how quick does the temp go up on the thermo guage. I only use my bikes on short distances and have never seen it go up.

When i got my head gasket replaced after overheating i asked the guy to look at it and he reckons he test rode it for about an hour and and it slightly went up.

If you riding it...it mine generally will go to operating after like 10 mins??

If its idling...id say it takes a fair bit longer...but u'd still see it go up after like 5mins.

mine too goes half for abt 10 min of riding.

i suggest you ride it for atleast 15min, surely the temp gauge wil go 50%.

usually your bum cheek will only feel the heat from the bike if the temp is abt 60% up. In your case, i dont know why u felt it while travelling for only short distance. You better check you temp gauge if its working or not.

What is located under your left butt cheek? EXUP Servo, Rad overflow, Fuses?

Oh, and I've had the fans come on about 3 times in the year and a half that I have owned my 1000. Traffic and a hot day in Seattle were the causes, otherwise, she runs cool.

I've only had the fan on my yzf come on once (38 degrees, stuck in traffic). All other summer days it never came on. On my fzr it was on any day it was over 30 degrees and in traffic.

    Re: my fan . .

'93 2kr? Is that the compliance date?

As for fan coming on straight away it is not normal unless it is already hot. Possible reasons could be that the previous owner wired it permanently on (which some people have done because of heat issues described above) or your thermo guage (and internal switch) is stuck (these work by expanding / contracting with heat. It is possible to get grease / grime in there and they will seize)

    2KR. . .

    it is what is indicated in the registration. what was the dates 2KR's were manufactured? i'm a beginner with my bike and must do a lot of research for it. <!-- s:-? --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_Eyecrazy.gif" alt=":-?" title="Eye Crazy" /><!-- s:-? --> <!-- s:o --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_surprised.gif" alt=":o" title="Surprised" /><!-- s:o --> <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

the 2kr is typically pre 1990 (usually 1988 or 1989). 3lns were 1989 ~ 1995. That was why I thought it would be the compliance date.
