So these little beauties are staying at my place for a while. A mate from the club was looking for project bikes and both of these were at a basement price he couldn't refuse so we spent hours driving back and forth from Winchelsea picking them up.

The first is an XS250, 1980. The second is a 1980 RX125. Bit of a barn find because although cosmetically they're a bit rough I reckon they're in pretty good condition. The XS250 purrs like a kitten when fresh fuel was put in but we're yet to try the RX (we're told it runs but the kick stand is broken). I'm still in awe of the condition of these bikes... the only things wrong we know about are cosmetic, few little bits missing like the front brake lever/speedo on the RX, a bit of fuel leaking from the taps (probably o rings) and a seized front caliper on the XS. I'm sure we'll find a few other niggly bits but this will be fun...!

I'm setting up this thread to help my mate who will join here soon as he starts to learn and work on the bikes etc and I'll help him post updates and such. For the moment, feast your eyes...

Yes I reckon. The RX would make a great scrambler I reckon. Any service information we know of/similarities to other bikes perhaps? It seems simple enough though a manual can come in handy.

Really? One thing we are trying to figure out is approximate value if we just give them a general clean up and ensure they're all working. I anticipated the RX would be harder to find in this sort of condition but maybe the XS is similar. If you have any thoughts happy to hear them, they seem to be all original and we're yet to trowel through the box of parts we got with them to ensure we have everything.

I think the RX might stay because 2 strokes are just so much fun but he might be open to moving on the XS depending what he can get and if he doesn't get too attached to it lol

I'm just excited to work on the 2 stroke...!

    They look pretty much complete

If they are going to sit for awhile , spray the motor and everything with Inox

If its only slight pitting on the chrome alot of it may come off using Inox and rubbing it with a crunched up piece of aluminium foil

We have three or four RX's here in the VJMC, so not real rare.
The XS would look good (imho) with a good clean up, flat bars, deleted rear rack, small tail light and a cafe seat, and still be a usable everyday bike.
What ever you decide to do have fun.

Good to know. The problem with it is the kick has broken - would you happen to know someone who might have a spare replacement? Be interested to have a chat, not sure welding this one back together is going to ensure it's as good as it was.

Here's a vid of the XS running today before we started stripping her back. There's no hanging in the throttle at all and it's smooth through the revs.

Few photos of what we found digging in. The best part was opening up the carby and finding it clean as a whistle. The oil was dark but still OK surprisingly, it wasn't full of lumpy stuff it flowed out quite well. Needed an oil change but was well preserved I guess. We tried to push start the RX but she won't go. I think the carby will have to come off for a clean before we can do much, also fuel was pouring out of the bowl overflow so something not right is going on there. We sorta decided to leave it until we do something with the kick so we concentrate on one at a time.

We're now working on the surface rust and chrome parts with a view of doing an oil change with the new filter and seeing how she looks. I think then the owner will make a choice on what to do with it next... it would make a cool cafe, but it might end up being one or the other that remains a project. Something about an RX scrambler that just bleeds awesomeness....

They are one of the best looking 250's as a Cafe... and so simple... lovely bike.
