    So after experimenting a lot with vinegar, it does a good job at lifting off the surface rust however without "scrubbing" or agitating the whole surface it becomes a bit problematic. The flash rusting that occurs afterwards is quite rapid. I've read some tutorials about using HCl instead (basically pool grade stuff) has anyone ever tried that? I need something to dissolve the rust not just lift it if possible, accessibility is a real issue for tanks.

    I looked at all the alternatives but decided to bite the bullet and buy a kit which has the correct products to dissolve, clean and then seal the tank...for $110.
    To many variables in trying to find a "cheap" way of cleaning your tank...

    What kit did you use? Honestly for what the bike cost me I'd rather turf the tank than invest a hundy into it haha... but that's because I'm cheap.

    I haven't used it yet... I want to get all my prep done first... just incase there is any hammer work to be done.
    The kit I have is M.C.S Premium Tank Sealant Kit.
    It includes Chemwash, Rustprep and Tank sealant...
    I would have considered it too... but the SRX250 tanks are like Rocking horse droppings...

    mmm phosphoric acid for the rust off. Was thinking hydrochloric would work too, about $16 for 4L by memory. Vinegar is Acetic acid, probably weaker than the other two. I wonder what acid the KBS kits use, will do some digging.

    PPC and KBS are very similar product's , i'd guess they both use the same ingredient's
    From memory the fuel tank repair kit was designed for the US military

    whatever you do don't put HCL in there, Chlorine makes changes it to a soluble iron salt, so all of the rust will dissolve, however it removes the rusted metal and you will end up with holes if the rust is deep anywhere

    check this thread takes a few days and several changes of the solution depending on the amount of rust present, but it works wonderfully

    OH and I should mention that HCL will generate hydrogen gas with the potential for explosion

    Hmm I might give that a go... I've got most of that stuff lying around. I don't think there is any liner left in the tank it's just flash rust but it's pretty caked from what I can see.

    In other news I think I just scored an FZR400 for a steal... plan is to pickup saturday... Not stopping me on the rebuild but I'm excited for that too....!

    Well on the 250 side of things I rang my trusty dealer today and the base gaskets are no longer available (the FZX and FZR 3LN have the same part number so that goes for either). The head gaskets however are still available for $32.00 (part 3LN-11181-00).

    Ups to City West Yamaha in Hoppers Crossing - they always look after me :D

    So have ordered a new head gasket, but I'll use the copper cement to reuse the base gasket. Next stage is to confirm what I do with the rings/bore... Still in two minds about that. I suppose it doesn't help that I'm slightly distracted by the 400...
