ok i realise that there are other threads on this but i cant find anything specific to this question.. i went into ipswich the other day and was in traffic for 5 mins only and my temp gauge went up to the red. pulled over and let it cool down a little bit then continued on my merry way and shortly after (couple mins still in traffic) and it was almost in the red again, got moving and it slowly went back down. today i got home and the temp was pretty high (about 75-80%) and the fan wasnt on and i cant recall ever seeing it on. i saw stuff about checking a thermostat but what the hell is that? where is it and what does it look like? i really dont know much about electrics at all so if you could answer in really basic terms would be muchly appreciated (oh and my coolant and everything seems fine)

Really only sounds like the fan is not working.

The thermostat housing is behind the radiator on the right hand side - just follow the hose from the radiator.

There are two electrical sensors on the housing. One is for the temp gauge (has one wire) the other is for the fan (two wires). This one is probably faulty.

Short out the two wires and the fan should run. If not, it is faulty.

You can hook a toggle switch to these wires as a temporary measure until you can replace the fan switch.

Not the thermostat (round valve that controls coolant flow), but rather the thermoSWITCH - small dingus with two wires that turns the fan on / off.

OMFG!!!!!! i got home today and was planning on putting the bike back together after i tighten the last two things on the thermostat housing that needed tightening so i get home push the bike out and tighten up what i can and began putting the tank cover back on it... so i was merrily tightening the screws that go from the round metal thing onto the fuel tank when the allen key slipped out of my fingers and bounced into the fuel tank. after a bit of time trying to find something to get it ouy with and failing i had no choice but to take the fuel tank off, empty it the tip it upside down and shake it!!!!!! (i would just like to point out ALL of this was because of a series of events following the fan not coming on) it came out and i got the tank back on then called it for today.. hopefully tomorrow i can put it back together then go for another ride but jeez the luck i seem to be having with this bike... I still love it

Funny that, I had a job at work friday where a machine operator dropped an allen key down a waste tube. Magnet and about 3 m of plastic conduit did the trick.

hey i have another question: i read its possible to have the thermoswitch still connected and working as well as having a manual over ride switch, how and where would i connect the switch to the wires goin to and fro the fan/thermoswitch? (specifically) thanks

You have two wires going to the thermo switch. You have two wires from your over-ride switch. Connect them in parallel.

what so i just connect the two wires from the manual switch to the two wires from the thermoswitch in the middle? that simple?

    Sometimes it's easy...

Just so we're clear - wire 1 on the manual switch goes to wire 1 on the thermoswitch; wire 2 to wire 2. The numbering doesn't matter, so long as you don't have M1 and M2 both going to T1, and T2 left all on its lonesome.

dammit.... i just got a second hand thermoswitch off a wreckers and put it on my bike tonight.. i hooked the leads up and let it run until the temp gauge went right to the red... and nothing. at all. everything after the thermoswitch works, as i have joined the ends with some wire (shorted it) and it worked. what could be the problem??? i realise since the part is 2nd hand it MIGHT not work but realistically it should... is there anything else that could be the problem or am i just unlucky and should go buy a NEW one? thanks guys

and two other things: when i rig up the manual override switch, rather than cutting off the rubber coating and joining the wires that way could i just stick them in the plastic bit that goes onto the thermoswitch? (on the other side to what the prongs stick in, the one on the side closest to the fan) and when i drained the coolant last night none came out from the overflow, is there a different drain point for that? i opened the bottom screw on the left hand side at the bottom of the frame.

The overflow bottle does not drain with the rest of the system, so you will have to remove it to empty, or syphon it out with a hose, but beware radiator coolant with additive is toxic. Best to remove overflow bottle.

    ahh thanks dave, always helpful.

anyone have any ideas about my fan not coming on?

I just put the manual switch on anyway (got a bit impatient) and it works well.

Get a new switch if you can. Although I only had the manual switch on mine.

Check what thread is used and you may be able to buy a suitable one at an auto shop (Repco, Bursons, Autobarn or Supercheap etc)

Electrically it needs to switch on at 102 degC rising and off at 97 degC falling, temperatures which you should be obtain in a frypan with cooking oil.

yeah ill try that but ill go buy a multimeter tomorrow hopefully and test it with cooking oil in the pan.

but theoretically it could only be the thermoswitch causing the problem right?
