i have a '91 3ln, i'v had it since late november last year and up until approx a month ago didnt have any issues what so ever.

then i decided to fill her up with 98 octane instead of 91 just to see what difference it would make. well not much but when i filled her up with 91 again it started to lag in power in the low rev range(more than usual) up in above 10 000 RPM was fine but below that it took forever to wind up even in a low gear, after a few days of thought i remembered filling up with 98 so i did that again and the problem was gone. and have been using 98 ever since. but still once in a while i experience the lack in power in the low rev range

so first of all: would the type of fuel i use be able to do this if so why? and if not what fuel do you use?

and second of all if its not the fuel what can i do to make her run smooth? im 17 and have done all the servicing on my bike so far but dont really want to have to get into the carbies unless im sure theres something wrong with them.

thanks in advance for any help

I used to use unleaded (91) but when I tried 96 there was no difference. Not everyone reports the same results.

Try running injector cleaner in your fuel for a while to clean the carbs. Just read the instructions regarding too much use and how it can affect the engine oil with overuse.

ok cool so the difference in octane shouldnt really be making such a big difference?

injector cleaner, im sure iv seen some specific products out there. but my dad always says using a tiny bit of acetone in the tank of an old car cleans the engine up nicely

Acetone has been long touted as improving fuel efficiency by allowing petrol to atomise much easier, as well as its well known ability to be used as a paint stripper. Do a google search on the net about acetone and fuel. NOTE - Only very small amounts required.

Higher octane fuel does not itself create more power. Quite the opposite, in fact - the more stable, slower burning composition actually LOSES power in an engine that was happy with the cheap stuff. What the high octane blends allows is engine configurations - high compression, forced induction, advanced ignition - that would otherwise cause detonation, but combined with the stable fuel generate more horses.

My TZ would probably blow its brains out in less than a lap on 87 octane 'regular'; my FZR might start on the 108 octane leaded VP C12 I run as pre-mix, but it sure as hell wouldn't run well enough that I'd feel safe on the street...
