Well I am newbie to bikes and riding, but it seems it is having a few problems - Me and my little Fizzer.

I did the Qride course on Saturday. I did fine, got my licence, but the bike had a few tantrums.

* We went to start riding and the man said, "Go wait for me over there", so we did. And when I got there the bike stalled like it likes to do... maybe from the cold... maybe from something else... But it started adn fan fine for a few mins before hand... Then I went to start it again and it didnt want to start!!! The Qride man had to push start it Perhaps it has a short somewhere? Or maybe it just gets nervous... cause it did the same friggin thing when I took it to get a RWC. Suggestions?

* With regard to the stalling, I normally put it down to being cold... but it liked to do it when I stopped, and quite frequently. I had to do some emergency braking practice, and the bike stalled before I could came to a stop. Then it did it at every traffic light we came to. Frustrating much. I think it idling properly. It has a new fuel filter and fuel pump in it, so I dont think its a lack of fuel... Suggestions?

* We did some high way riding (much fun), and when I was doing over 8 grand revs, generally bout 10 grand, I had a the pretty little "speed" light glowing at me (bout 80 in 5th and 100 in 6th). Why is it glowing at me at only 8 grand... Its frustrating cause i wana go faster, but i hate little red lights glowing at me... cause they normaly mean "you're doing something bad". Help! I wana go faster

* We did some high way riding, then came in to do a whole heap of town riding, and it got really really hot... Before we did a heap of stoplights we stopped just outside of town and it was running hotter than normal, then the town riding, all the friggin stoppiong and starting sent it right up to the red on the temp gauge. I think it might be the thermo fan, cause I have never seen it run on the bike, only when we hooked it up to a battery so we know it does work... the radiator fluid was ok... Suggestions?

I dont have an owners manual, but I wana have some idea whats going on before I take it to a mechanic.
Any ideas? Any help would be much appreciated
If any of these issues have been posted about before, please feel free to refer me to them!

I forgot to say I have a 2KR

Generally the bike shouldn't just stall..whether it be hot or cold. If it is cold...you should be starting it and letting it run with the choke on until its at operating temperatue.

The red light as far as I know is a japanese thing..because their speed limits are max 80km/h, it will come on at 80km/h to let you know. Take no notice of it (unless its the oil light!)

As for the bike running hot, if the fan is working..check the thermostat is opening. To check..take it out of its housing..and place it in a pot of water and heat it..you should notice a plunger starting to open around the operating temperature (sorry I cant remember what this is...around 70 degrees???)

My initial thoughts are that the bike may be running rich. With the new fuel pump and filter, more fuel may be getting through to the carbs than was previously possible. Even if the bike has been tuned recently, with changes to the fueling system you need it tuned again - annoying but necessary.

The speed light is just a 2KR thing. Us lucky 3LN owners have no such irritation - but to be completely honest i'd just unplug it (or remove the bulb) and never have to look at it again.

As for the overheating... well i discovered that the fan is MEANT to kick in on all FZR's just before it reaches the red on the guage. Even with a new thermoswitch it does this; thanks Yamaha for keeping us paranoid. ;)
Most of the time i won't see/hear my fan kick in unless i'm commuting and lane splitting at obscenely slow speeds, and stopping at every red light in Melbourne.

There's a link to the manual for the FZR400, essentially same bike, in one of the "sticky's" at the top of this forum listing.

Can't unplug it unfortunately as it (and the sensors) are embedded in the speedo - you will need to remove the bulb if you want to get rid of it.

As for stalling - a 'work-around' is when coming to a stop pull the clutch in and give it a few revs (perhaps up to 4000-5000 for a second or two). My old fzr was running rich and I found this tactic to work quite well. Also when sitting at a light for extended periods I would do this every minute or so. But sounds like it may be running rich as Koma suggested.

Overheating and stalling sound to me like the carbies need to be balanced as well.

Ok mine had a habit of stalling when i got to the top of my driveway (steep drive with flat area at top) and I adjusted the idle speed up a bit and had no more probems.

AS for the temperature probs, my thermo switch was rewired to a toggle switch instead (courtesy of a previous owner) so I can switch it on if it gets hot. But living in Tas I rarely use it (just lately daytime temps been around 10-12 deg)

I was contemplating wiring a toggle switch in parralel with the thermoswitch so i can switch it on if i'm going to be doing the afternoon lane split commute home. That's about the only time my bike gets warmer than 1/2 way up the temp range.

Having said that, see my first post about when the fan is apparently MEANT to kick in - just before red!

When I first bought my fzr...the fan would kick in halfway and maintain the temperature there. But then this thermostat failed on me..and I picked up a second hand one at a wreckers that would cause the fan to come on just before the red.

Wonder if you could find a thermostat that kicks in maybe 5 degrees lower?

Hi Yamigirl,

I was experiening the exact same thing on my bike. (1992 3LN)

It was so bad I was reluctant to use it for the motorcycle operators skills test.

I was also afraid of stalling in harms way.

Boz method is a good workaround but it drains you to 'baby' the bike at lights like that.

I took it to a local mechanic (Mick Cook, Castle Hill Motorcycles, Sydney)

They cleaned a heap of crud out of the carbs and adjusted for a leaner mixture.

Have done 1000 km in two weekends without a hint of any further problems.

Loving life

Im having similar problems with a FZR Im rebuilding. wont start without a squirt of quickstart. Wont idle unless the I keep the revs up. And unless it is hot it wont start easy.
Ive already changed the barrell rings and headgasket, to get compression and the thing started, now to get it running smoothly.
Is there a reference for balancing/ setting carbs. When I accellerate, the revs will hang high for about 10 secs and then drop , This happens everyu time, but is a neusance when changing gears, as the thing revs when you pull in the clutch.

Any ideas?
