Sump Cover Gasket - Bandit

    Hi Guys,

    Doing the final engine clean before re-assemble and I'm not sure about something... This gasket has a filled in piece (circled in red) that spans across the base of the engine - what's it for and is it important?

    The reason I ask is because the gasket got a bit torn up when I took the sump cover off (glad I did, it had a few bits rolling around in there) and I don't think I could reasonably re use it without the risk of oil leaks. I'm planning on using some gasket maker for this bit as I need to check the engine runs before I go spending any more $ on gaskets (which can be a bit ridiculous for this bike). But anything I do here won't have the filled in bit under the engine, it will only seal around the join where the bolts are.

    Wondering what the consequences (if any) of this would be?

    why not go down to your local auto parts store and buy some gasket paper and cut a new one using the old as a template?comes in various thickness.

    Looks like it might act as a baffle to stop oil surge under braking/acceleration.

    Hmm ok great thanks. I'll make sure I do it properly then with some gasket material as Risky suggested.

    Hmm.. was doing a bit of reading around and it was suggested a cereal box cut to size and sprayed with gasket sealer would do the same thing...

    I get the whole do it right thing, but I don't want to throw anymore $ at this bike until I can guarantee the thing runs lol. Under most other circumstances I would agree with you Risky!

    been known to use packets before and grease each side but as submerged in oil would go the store bought material. will be under 20 bucks.

    Cork not suitable for what you doing. Any standard gasket jointing paper will be fine. May only need to be .5 to .75mm thick.

    Ok nice. Suppose same will go for the clutch cover. I've got both the original gaskets which helps I suppose, unfortunately not reusable.

    I'm up in brisbane in a couple of weeks actually, where is your store? I'm heading out to Tingalpa which could be wrong direction though.

    $12 from bursons auto parts, gave me 1/2 a meter so have enough for 2 or 3 gaskets :D
