So what could be the problem? i hear of people getting there fzr's past 180. Speed limiter maybe? maybe somthing needs tuning? it runs fine apart from the low top speed. my bike is a is a fzr250-2kr if that helps at all.

What is the gear ratio (how many teeth on each sprocket)? your weight? level, uphill, down hill? kissing the tank or just cruising?

For me, 150kph is cruising, my ole girl is just starting to breath and stretch her legs.... either that or I'm just snicking her into 3rd....

i hit 175 pretty easliy the other day on my '89 2kr, I don't see why yours shouldn't. The only thing i can suggest is maybe getting some one to take a look at it.

3ln's can break the infamouse 180 (down a slope with a tail wind)lol
if it runs fine why worry about it?
do you ride it that fast often enough to care?

although it runs fine try a major sirvice, my 3ln ran alot and i mean alot better and i didnt think there was much wrong in the first place.
I cleaned and ballanced carbs, spark plugs, checked valve clearances, new chain and sprocket, oil new air filter.

same!
had it at 170 and it was me that chickened out, not the bike! (due to my sig.other killing me if she ever found out )
i think it would go to redline in 6th for me, and i think that works out to ~185-190

I've said it before and i'll say it again; 180+ km/h on a 250 is kinda terrifying whilst on a 1000 it feels far far safer. Things start to heat up again on a 1000 when you roll past 250km/h and the trees start coming very very quickly.

I'm gonna give the carbs a clean and balance this weekend. What can anyone tell me about speed limiters? This is my first bike so i would really know what its performance should be at. I'll tell you how it goes.

They are the big red circles on poles at the side of the road. They have numbers on them which indicate the speed limit that you should not exceed.

The FZR has no speed limiters, just a rev limiter which usually operates just above the red line on the tacho...

my partners bike would go to 180kms easy
changed the chain and sprockets to standard set and bike now goes to 150kms... Have lost top 30ks but the actual size of the drive chain is twice the size and the acceleration from start off has improved dramatically. The chain and sprocket that was on the bike was from Jap when imported..so dont know if it was changed before I had it.. Happy with the accel now though

Ok i'm thinking its undergeared. in 6th, i'm doing 100 kph at 10k rpm, 110 kph at 11k rpm, etc...
17 teeth on the drive sprocket and 55 teeth on the rear sprocket. What are your sprocket sizes and relative speeds?

I do ~120kph @ 10,000 rpm.
I would suggest you have different gearing.

the reason i stated they can break it the poeple that live arround here think "if my CBR250RR cant do it than your bike definatley cant do it"

gotta love that attitude of some CBR owners. Why do they think that bike is superior?? Show me some facts, im curious.

Ok, here's some interesting reading for you regarding the FZR/CBR debate. All of these figures are based on the FZR250 3LN3 and the CBR250RR MC21.

Yamaha FZR 250 3LN3
249 = 48 Ñ… 34.5mm @ 12:1 compression ratio
45 hp @ 16000 rpm
24.5 Nm @ 12000 rpm
Dry weight - 146 kg
Fuel capacity - 14 Litres
38mm Telescopic forks
Monoshock preload adjustable.
Front 2x 285mm discs 4 piston calipers
Rear Single 210mm disc 2 piston caliper
Front - 100/80--17
Rear - 130/70-17

Honda CBR 250RR (MC21)
249 = 48.5 x 33.8 mm @ 11.5:1 comp ratio
40 hp* @ 14500 rpm
23.5 Nm @ 11500 rpm
Dry weight - 143 kg
Fuel capacity - 13 Litres
37 mm telescopic fork
Monoshock Box Section Swingarm
Front 2x 275mm discs 2 piston calipers**
Rear Single 220mm disc 1 piston caliper
Front 110/70-R17
Rear 140/60-R17

* = More likely to be 45 hp
** = I'm pretty positive that's not correct... as i can see twin piston calipers on each side but i'm not sure if they're the single sided or double sided calipers.

Now if anyone has any different information for the CBR250RR MC21 then by all means fill me in where those stats are wrong; but according to all of that the FZR is 3kg heavier dry, with comes down to 2kg heavier once fuelled up. The raw power output is greater at higher rpm, marginally more torque peaking at the same rpm but starting from a lower rpm due to the EXUP. Larger fuel tank (by 1 litre... woohoo). Thicker (and therefore assumed stiffer) front forks. Larger front brake rotors.

Of course those power figures are as they rolled off the factory floor so YMMV. From that i'd say the best 250 of the two of them would be a fighterised FZR250 3LN3 (or a 3LN1)... just to flatter SOBIL and all.

I do believe the cbr had a 45ps incarnation at one stage. Just like how the 3ln6 is only 40ps but the 3ln3 is 45.
