I went to change the plugs on my bike yesterday and found one of them to be a different sort of plug which had a metal bracket like thing making it screw in much less deep. It was forced in quite obviously and here I am left with a screwhole which only lets my NGK plug go in barely half way.

After some hiccups and troubles with idling my dad got it to run better by making the gap in the plug wider, we saw this on the old plugs to. Now it idles alright but I doubt it's sparking properly on that plug. I've had really bad fuel consumption (like 110k) up till the change and am still on the new tank.

Any advice? I've read stuff about helicoils but no idea how to use one and don't know what tools you need.

thx in advance, mrp

all i can say is bugger.

Haven't used the helicoils myself, but hear that they work wonders.

It sounds like you're going to need to take the head off (because it requires drilling, and the likes, I think). Might as well do valve clearances, etc, while you're in there.

I seem to remember some-one saying that if you heavily grease the helicoil tap all the swarf will stick to it and not fall into the cylinders.

Make sure that the piston is on the start compression stroke and wind it up (by hand) after cutting the thread, then blow it out with compressed air to be sure. Ask your mechanic to confirm this. This will save taking the head off.

Do you need any special tools to get to the heads?

Thx mat I'll keep that in mind

I was clued into this by a NR'r. It's a product that catches the metal shavings when redoing the thread http://www.powerbuilttools.co.nz/powerb ... nition.htm it's right near the top, problem is that 14mm is to big right? I'm pretty sure it's 10mm :/

there was someone here recently who had similiar problem
my advice to them was if you're lucky and do it carefully you may be able to clean the threads without taking the head, it is possible as i have done it before but like i said back them you'll need a special tap.

i did post a pic of it for reference, so have a look

BTW where are you?
