I just got my FZR together after going through the carbies. the bike will start, then quickly stall as if it is being starved for fuel. I have turned in the idle, so I know that isn't the problem. It seems as if the fuel pump isn't supplying enough pressure. Has anyone had any problems like this with the fuel pump? For the 5 or so seconds that it runs, it runs fine, also once warm if I can get it past the idle circuit it will rev out alright (which seems make it not a pump problem). This one has me baffled. I have never had a bike do this to me before.

I have not heard of that problem before, but for instance the bike will run for quite a while if the fuel valve is turned off. I managed start and ride mine almost a Kilometre (~1/2 Mile) before it stopped.

So if all the fuel bowls are full when you start it, the bike should run for quite a while. Check them all by opening the drain valves on each carb and see if you get equall amounts of fuel come out. Turn the ignition on with the valves still open and you will see if fuel is being pumped to the carbs.

It sounds more like an incorrect idle mixture setting or blockage in the same, or perhaps even an air leak on the rubber intake boots.

both fuel cocks are open, and I have the idle set high intentionally. When the bike first fires up it runs up to a high idle, but then drops and stalls. If I was getting a lean mixture from a leaky intake manifold, it would run rough. It acts like it is running out of fuel. On the other hand, it could be getting too much fuel. That would give me the same symptoms. I guess my next step is to check the float levels. I am also worried that I may have a blown head gasket. while I am doing a float level check I may as well check for compression. This thing is turning into quite the project. I should stick with my two strokes

Air leaks tends to make the engine run faster than expected. I would bet on a fuel problem, one way or the other. You may end up stripping the carbs again. Good luck...

HAPPY DAY! I figured it out. After pulling the jet blocks off the carbs again, I found that the pilot jets were partially clogged. It would allow enough fuel to start, but quickly starve the engine. Now the motor idles well and transfers much better onto the main jet. My next problem is excessive smoke (rich) at WOT. I have a bad feeling that the emulsion tubes (needle jets) are worn. I also got my forks today from Southern cross. At this rate of troubleshooting, I might actually get to ride the bike by the end of summer!

sorry, I forget that common terminology over here may not be at the bottom of the world. WOT = wide open throttle.
