Hi all. Recently made the right decision and bought an old fzr 3ln over the cbr. Been having trouble starting it and to date only goes clutch starting it down a hill. The starter turns over fine and battery seems ok, and that is where my knowledge of motorcycle mechanics ends.

The black rubber (rocket ?) gasket has a slit in the semicircle section on one side, leeking a little oil, perhaps losing compression? Obviously I will see to this ASAP. The other thing is when idling, pulling on the throttle the engine sort of lags at 4000rpm and wont get past it.

Can you guys point me in the right direction to start looking. Dont know where id be without this gem of a site, no cash yet for a proper service lol. Hopefully this dosnt turn out too major and looking forward to my new life with an fzr <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

    cheers

    1. The rocker cover gasket does not affect compression, but leaking oil is never a good thing. You can replace it (best option but possibly $$$), or you can get some gasket goop and try and repair it. Your choice.

    2. So it won't get past 4000rpm? Have you tried pulling the choke on and seeing if it'll go past 4000rpm?
I'd be checking the usual suspects for this one...
    - EXUP valve moving properly and adjusted
    - Fuel getting through? (clogged line/filter?)
    - Air filter not completely dirty and choked up
Once you've checked all of those, it's time to get intimate with the carbs - probably check float levels, idle mixture settings etc.
I guess it's important to ask, how does it idle? Smoothly? What rpm?
