Decided to tighten my chain (first time = success) and whilst I was under there I spotted this disgusting looking disease under my exhaust!! Very out of sight and had no clue about it since I bought the bike. It is under the expansion chamber (at least that's what I think its called) and not on the headers. 11655494_10204562919976931_1872964782_n.jpg

Should I be worried? what are my options? it seems like some sort of metal sheet around the exhaust that is corroded and rusty, the inner tube does not seem to be crackling and falling apart.

I would put some rust killer on it and leave alone until it becomes a hole. Then you will have to plate over it or renew the section of pipe.

Not a pretty picture but as you said... "out of sight=out of mind". Your can looks to be in poor condition, rust is always the enemy.
Alas with rust it simply doesn't stop so what can you do.
    - purchase another can is one option that I would follow.
The rust will eventually work it's way through the can and can cause pressure issues, not sure on your bike if the can is separate or is it a continuous length from the headers to the can. All scenario's can be rectified easily enough, not too hard to fix.

Does it connect to the headers like this?
