    Hi all,

I just bought a 1990 FZR250, which i am really excited about. However, i bought it with a limited warranty... If i get it to run, it's mine... otherwise take it back. So I am working within a limited time period.

When i got it, it would kick over but wouldn't start. So i got new plugs, gave it an oil and filter change, and got it to go by throwing some fuel down the carbs, and then giving it a good rev.

Now it'll only run with the choke on full. I can rev it when it is warm (to about 8,000 RPM when choke is on, then if i cut the choke when it is revving, will go all the way to 18,000 RPM but then will die when i let the RPMs drop) I am running it with the air filter off. Just wondering where i should start.

There is fuel running to the carby, I removed the fuel line and started the ignition, then pumped some fuel into a bottle just to check. The exup valve is working fine on start up too. I reset the idle mixture screws to 3 turns from in on each carb.

How can i check the air/fuel mixture settings? Is there a fuel additive i can add to flush the carbies? or do i have to take them apart?

    Any help is greatly appreciated,

    Liam.

If i was you i would pull the carbies right apart and clean them and also set the clip on the needle in each carbie to the middle position ans see how you go

    status update

    Hey guys,

I've never cleaned carbies before so i'm looking for a little direction. The injector cleaner worked a little, it doesn't stall until 3000RPM with no choke now (although I have to hold it there with the accelerator)

I pulled the float housings off 3 of the 4 carbies today. (one of the phillip head screws was busted so i couldn't get it off.) The housing was clean and the 2 flat head hollow screws didn't look blocked. I took them out anyway and poked some wire through just to be sure.

There was a bolt there... if I undo that is that how i access the jets?

Also, where is the fuel mixture screw? Is it the big one on the side near the choke cable?

    Thanks for your help.

Have a search through the HOW TO section, most of what you need is in there.

    carby

I did a search through the how to section... And didn't find anything as comprehensive as i would like. How do i get access to the Jet in order to check the clip on the needle?

I'll just jump into it with the info i've found and hope for the best. I'll just make sure than i can re-do anything i undo... I will post some pics in over the weekend and see how it goes. Thanks for your help so far, i'm sure i'll be needing more in the weeks to come.

    Re: carby

    I hope not.. in that your endeavours are succesfull <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

It may be prudent to soak the dismantled carbs, jets, etc for a long period in a powerful paint stripper such as acetone to dissolve any gunk in the galleries. Don't soak any plastic parts if there are any..
