Hi Guys, Got a bit of a funny story, I guess only myself to blame... I was heading out to Healsville (100kph) and i really wanted to see how many k's I could get off my main tank because it is running really rich at the moment, I felt the motor strugle a little so bent down and flicked the switch. Just my luck, I find out that my reserve did not work. I am sure it was on main, but it seemed like it had used 100% of the fuel. Any Ideas on what may have caused this? So basically I was stuck in the middle of f'ing nowhere untill a car pulled up (he was a bike rider) and dropped me off at the petrol station. So I have learnt my leason now not to do stupid experiments. Rob.
2 questions: 1) how far did you get before running out? 2) how much fuel did you refill with when you finally got to a servo? I can get around 140 in city riding before reserve, and 170+ country / open riding before reserve. The reserve fuel tap can get clogged (which is the reason I ask the second question). If this happens and you turn to the reserve tank it is essentially useless - after all no fuel no go. If you were truly out of fuel you should have filled with close to 12 litres. There are two streams of thought with using the reserve: - run your tank down so you end up using the reserve tap all the time. This prevents build up of crap in the tank because it is getting flushed through the engine in small amounts. - try to avoid using it because when you do the crap in the tank is put through the system. I tend to go towards the second philosophy, but I understand the first as well. (by the way - I don't think your experiment was stupid. Quite a logical one. It is just unfortunate that the reserve tank didn't work for whatever reason - had it worked your experiment would have been a success!)
I get about 120-130 km from a full tank before the reserve is needed but my bikes running a bit rich at the moment. rob, are your pipes connected up right to the tank as if u've got the reserve pipe going to the main port on the tap u use all the fuel up on 'on' and when u switch to reserve theres nothing left in the main tank. Does anyone know if theres anyway of flushing out a tank to get all the crap out of it cos ive got my tank off at the moment (respraying my bike) and theres loads of gunk in the bottom of it? Dan
I have taken my tank off before to clean, and used a small amount of fuel to 'swish' inside, and then tipped that out. It wastes a bit of fuel, but seemed to get lots of stuff out for me. I don't know what water etc. would do to the tank when it is reattached (I am assuming nothing if it is allowed to evaporate before installing). p.s. - welcome to the site Dan!!!
Thanx guys, I dot 180ks pretty much on the dot (does this sound average for the main tank? country riding?). I gave it a shake and it felt really empty but maybe it is hard to tell cause I remember putting in 10 litres. When I get home from work I might pull the tank off and have a closer look to see where the tubes are going and also clean them out. Thanks again. Rob.
180 sounds about right for the main tank. If you are running a bit rich that mayactually be for the entire tank though too. Hard to tell - with only 2 litre reserve there is not much way to tell.
recently just purchased a 92 frz250 3LN and dont have a clue which way to flick the fuel switch when riding <!-- s:???: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":???:" title="Confused" /><!-- s:???: --> i know this sounds silly but i am a newbie. firstly the switch has "res" up on the top, "off" on the left and "fuel" on the bottom. which way do i turn it while riding. i have been told once to turn it to the "res" switch which i think seems fairly awkward. but what i do know is to turn it off otherwise the fuel will flood the carbies. any help would be lovely.
U run the bike on the 'on' position...when u find the bike losing power, u quickly switch it to reserve..and that will hopefully give u enough petrol to get to the nearest station If you leave the bike on reserve..ull have no idea when the tank will empty...and u will run out of petrol lol.

So how often do you guys have to fill up your tank. Twice a week? If you are riding everyday. Sorry im new to bikes as well. If so bike doesnt rely save much fuel than cars.
A bike will typically get about 100k/6-8 litres in the city (USUALLY will be lower if it isn't a sports bike, more if it is a twin). A car will typically get 100k/9-11 litres in the city. So you do save in fuel a bit. On my fzr I would put in 10 litres at around 150 (or 100k/7.5 litres). As for number of times to fill - I did 3 times per week. But I also commute 70 k round trip to work each day.
to clean the petrol tank out properly, use a small amount of fuel and shake the hell outta it. do not use water, it will rust/not evaporate properly. metho can also be used as a substitute for fuel when cleaning, just make sure you drain as much of it out of the tank as possible, then fill the tank up with fuel before starting it. Metho is flammable and will combust, but it is bad for you plugs. i get anywhere between 160 - 190 kms per main tank when riding (10lt). lately it is only about 160 kms per 10Lt due to the carbies running rich.
Ahhh back to basics for a sec - does the 2kr have the same size tank as the 3ln? I've got an '88 2kr and don't reallly know how much juice the main tank holds until it hits reserve (I'm assuming the total tank holds 12l)

Hi i recently ran out right on 200 kms Switched it over went a further 10 kms to the servo then filled it up with 13 litres (1990 3LN)
