I replaced my cam chain today, and this time I made sure it was done right. I got the cams to alignment, made sure the number of links between the Exhaust mark and the Intake mark was 29 (previous cam chain was at 28, and so was the new one the first time I installed the new chain), put everything back together and now the bike won't start with the start button. When the cam chain was put at 28 links, the bike fires up and starts fine, but I have the really really bad cam chain rattle. I can get the bike to run if I push start it, and when it does run, there is no cam chain rattle or grinding noises and everything seems to run perfectly fine. Doesn't stall or drop RPM, and can idle just fine TL;DR: Cam chain set at 28 links apart: Bike starts fine, but runs with really bad cam chain rattle Cam chain set at 29 links: Bike wont start unless push started, runs like a dream.
Is it setting correctly.. I hate auto tensioners always makes me paranoid when restrating the bike after any cam work or even basic shimming... Have you got a manual one you can try?? U can pick them up pretty cheap. Nit really sure what else it could be... Experts input please
I've got a manual one from a ZZR250, I've already given it a go. when the cams are set at 28 links apart it doesn't get rid of the ticking/grinding sound, when the cams are set at 29 links then the bike runs fine except I have to push start it.
Did you touch the flywheel/ starter ring when you changed the chain ? If it bump starts and runs fine then I don't think it's cam chain related.
Found it. Turns out the cam chain and the failure to start are 2 seperate issues. Found out that I have no spark so I decided to check the primary and secondary windings on my coils. 1+4 Coil Pri: 3.3 Sec: 24.4 3+4 Coil Pri: 3.5 Sec: 25.7 Turns out my secondary windings are too high on the ohms.
