So I ordered a new cam chain and it arrived already riveted and connected to itself.

can I just break the chain, instal it and then use the old rivet to rivet it back together?

Yeah never had a problem. The tricky part is aligning all the parts of the chain and not forcing the pin in, otherwise you could easily damage it, or cause a stiff link

You'll be fine mate provided you remove and reattach the right way.

you can but is it worth the risk ,a broken cam chain can do a lot of damage ,could be worth a couple more days off the rd and do it proper
