Ok so as many of you here know, I recently bought a brand new daelim vjf250. Recently, I've noticed the powdercoat on the frame near the footpegs getting scraped off by my boots. This for many of us with perimeter-style frames, is an unfortunate factor. Seems all the engineering in the world can go into a bike, and very few times do they actually get those protective frames ANYWHERE near where they are needed.

On top of all this, I live in the dandenongs. Exposed steel rusts VERY quickly, and NO-ONE wants rust on their frame. Thusly, I hatched a plan.

    YOU WILL NEED:
    1 cheap tank protector
1 can rust remover of some kind (I used brasso, but whatever) - if you'ree a bit late on the job like I was!
    1 Pair Scissors
1 Motorbike (If this is missing, well...)
Some paper toweling (or other absorbant material)
    One polishing rag

Firstly, you'll need to cut up the tank protector. On my Progrip one (ought at about 6 bucks from ebay), I used the top portion and then cut it in half. Premeasurement had told me that this would give me all the coverage I would need through most of the foot swing, and would also look stylish :D

    And the second

Use a sharp pair of scissors and cut cleanly without removing any of the paper backing. You do not want jagged edges, or any point where the adhesive will dry or come away. It has to stick to the frame of your bike, after all!

Once cut, to work! Polish up the section you want with brasso or whatever, ensuring to remove ANY AND ALL rust you can see. Think for every little bit of rust left, a puppy cries. PUT YOUR BACK INTO IT (WO)MAN!
Ok, all that heavy work done with, gently polish it up with theĀ  paper towel, and ensure to remove ALL excess brasso (other polish). let it dry for a bit then do it again. The metal needs to feel very clean and very dry when touched. Now that you've touched it, go ahead and wipe off your fingerprint too. Leave no evidence!

EVIL RUST! PUPPY TEARS! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

    And afterwards, much better.

Now you have a nice clean shiny spot on your frame, rust free and sparkly, apply the decal. You want to avoid ar bubbles at all costs, so be careful. That being said, this is hardly rocket science. This is motorcycle maintenence.

    Left

Allow some time for the adhesive to cure a bit naturally (Say half an hour?) and then go on, take it out for a ride! Peace of mind that your frame won't rust away beneath you and the chicks will still dig that flawless black finish!

    Happy riding!
