    Hey guys I went to MCA a while ago and I got an oil filter from them for my 3LN I didn't know exactly what I needed so I gave em the spec in the handbook that is on this website. They fetched it for me and all was good. But when I went to replace it my stepdad told me I got the wrong one. and I need a spin on oil filter and not the type they gave me. The one they gave me is just a small filter type thing. Not one of those larger ones inside a canaster. Why did they give me the wrong one then? Or why is it like this in the handbook. What type of oil filter do I need? As it happens this was 1 month ago and so the oil was changed however the filter was not. Probably not a good idea but =\

    Sounds like you got the right one.

    The filter does not sit inside a cannister like a car one. Its an exposed filter.

    It does not screw in either. When you take of the filter cover on the bike, you will notice a little rise in the middle to hold the filter.

    Also take note which way the existing filter comes out, just in case you forget which way it should go!

    The 3ln's have a canister filter (I thought - now corrected - some do, some don't) - the 2kr's use an exposed filter. So my guess is that they gave you a 2kr rather than 3ln one.

    Interesting - learning more and more each day. I know I saw a 3ln and I commented that it was an exposed filter... Maybe I am just out of my head at the moment.

    I'm not crazy! See the post by Koma (second from bottom at the moment): <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.fzr250.com/viewtopic.php?t=956">viewtopic.php?t=956</a><!-- l -->

    So the 3ln does use a canister - at least some do...

    Go and ask for a fzr250 3ln oil filter Yamaha part number = 3FV - 13440 - 10. It is used for a few different bikes that Yamaha make and is a small black canister type one that screws in.

    In the bike store i went into they flatly refused to believe me that it was a canister type; even after saying if i got the part number they'd swap it over for me.

    I rode my bike over, got the parts guy out there, stuck his head under the bike and says, "Oh, so it is!" As Ciarin said, it's used on a few of Yammy's other bikes, not sure but i think its also on the YZF600 (Thundercat, not R6), aswell as the FZ6N and a few others (don't quote me on that one ;))

    It is on the bottom of the sump and you will have to remove the exhaust system to get at it.

    There are 3 allen head screws holding a round plate under the sump. Undo these, remove the plate and the filter should fall out.

    Some people will recommend changing a filter every 3000 k's. Some bike manuals will suggest 10 000 k's (and oil every 5000). More frequent = better bike life. My rule:

    If using non-synthetic or cheaper oil I will change oil and filter every 4-5000 k's.

    If using part or full synthetic oil I will change oil at 4-5000 k's, and oil and filter every 8-10 000 k's.

    You may want to read this for the 'how to': <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.fzr250.com/viewtopic.php?p=4969#4969">viewtopic.php?p=4969#4969</a><!-- l -->
