I never noticed a difference cold to hot. I would expect it to be the cold fill mark at half way as the oil will expand when hot..

If you do not know the oil that is in it, i would dump the oil and replace with somthing good. i use MOTUL 5100. Brilliant stuff! You pay through the nose for it, but it is well worth it.

Just go get Motul 5100 and be assured that you have the best.

the numbers are to do with the viscousity of the oil while cold (the 1st number) and while hot (the second number).

I know fzr250's are "supposed" to have 10w30 but any common weight oil will do fine as long as it is decent and is changed regular.

I know i keep repeating myself but IMHO you will NOT find a better motorcycle oil that the MOTUL 5100.

BTW NEVER put car oil with friction modifiers into your MC.
your clutch will pack up on you!!!

Smoke is not a good sign... I would suggest having a compression test done. it would not be an issue with the oil. take it to a mechanic asap and get them to have a look.

what oil were you running before?

Not saying you are silly or anything, but if you got a little oil down the headers when you were doing the oil filter, that can make a lot of smoke.

Au contraire; smoke can be related to the oil that your using. It will only make a slight difference but using an excessively light oil in hot conditions means that more oil will allowed to slip past the rings and will be burnt in the cylinder.

Any smoke should be taken as a warning that something is happening in your engine that shouldn't be. White smoke (or steam) may indicate a lean condition or in the even of steam a busted gasket. Black smoke is almost definitely excess petrol being burnt either due to a rich condition or due to valves not closing/sealing properly.

Time to be proactive i think.

PS. You didn't over fill the oil did you? If it's oil being burnt it'll generally have a slightly gummy/tacky smell to it and the smoke will be a blue'ish colour.

im not sure wat sort of oil was in it brought it bout 3 weeks ago and it was running fine no smoke at all running a little rich though. i put motul 5100 and a genuine yamaha oil fillter on it. the oil it a little high bout 3/4 the way up the eyeglass but that not high enough to corse problems i wouldnt of thought. but its only started blowing smoke now. should i take it for a good thrash then see what its like or straight to the mechanic? when i did the oil change i didnt tip any oil in the wrong spots i dnt think. i put a small amount around the oil fillter before i screwd it on. and the rest in that cap on the right hand side of the motor.

Koma just proved me wrong

if you are not sure, like koma said, be proactive. take it to a mechanic.

It all depends on what sort of smoke your getting and at what rpm. It could be the Motul 5100 is too thin for your slightly tired engine. By the way, i believe there are two versions of the 5100, a 10w50 and a 15w50. Which one did you use?

I started off using Shell oils in my bike when i first started riding but quickly discovered that the semi-synth oils were overpriced and didn't provide the sort of gearbox feel i was expecting (kinda notchy and stiff). If the SX4 is the fully-synth stuff then i'd say your wasting your money. I've always been of the opinion that a trusted middle of the range oil being used and changed within it's life span is better than a high end oil thats 'meant' to have a longer life.
I still stand by my cheap as chips Penrite HPR10 as a generic bike oil... although it had a price hike in the last few months which i wasn't happy about but i still continue to use it.

You'd be amazed at how much a good old Italian Tune-Up does for the FZR250. These engines NEED to be spinning at a decent rate otherwise things just get gummed up and carbon-ised. (I think those are technical terms )

Depends on the age and condition of the bike and the average ambient temperature. You'll notice 3/5ths of zip difference between the 15w and the 10w oil generally.
I can't remember what Yamaha specified but given the recent warm weather we've been having in the South West Pacific your probably better off with the 15w.
