Hi all thought I'd try and use some knowledge from you guys who I hope have a wealth of experience of these very rare bikes over here in England. I have an mc19 which I purchased with the head off for a bargain price. Does anyone know the reason why the top hats that sit under the valve springs wear away and how to stop it? I've also found recently that someone has kindly added a spring washer under the needles from the carbs. This is just a start.

welcome to the site mate.. that's a good starter bike you have there.. wear away how? do you mean to say they are burnt? or has something (the piston) been just touching them enough to cause damage? as for the carbi question.... I'm still learning my self on that one.. so if i find the answer I will let you know.. most definitely download a E-manual for the bike... you can get one that covers MC series from the manual I do believe..

    cheers

Many thanks. The top hats sit under the valve springs and protect the ally cylinder head from wear. When the head was stripped I noticed 3 had the washer part worn away completely leaving the part that goes around the valve guide.
I have all the manuals luckily and parts lists. So far it's had new rings some main bearings, head overhauled including some valve guides, carbs ultrasonic cleaned and new gaskets from blair. New plugs new ht leads and still not had it out on the road apart from a little blast around the block. Just not running right low down. Fine when the bikes not under load but when you get on it to pull away I have to slip the clutch. I'm going to drop it off with a guy to set the fuelling up on a dyno as I can't think of much more.
