g'day, after the bike snapped a rod in number 1 cylinder i'm looking for a new engine...a 3LN for my 1989 FZR250RR.
anyone purchased one before and who would you recommend going to? all i really need is the bare engine as i still have carbs/sensors/wiring from the old engine.
i got a quote of 1200 for a 5000klm engine from import mc in qld, plus 110 freight. sound good?
i'm located in ballarat, victoria too.
cheers,
dave

Im pretty sure there are some wreckers in melbourne that can get them for around the 700-800 dollar mark. Theres on in the eastern suburbs..think lilydale that do that. I have never brought one though..and im not sure how legit the kms are....

regarding the import MC in queensland - someone on this site (I forget who...) had a bad experience with them. The bought a low km engine, but when they got it I seem to recall the person said it was 'obviously left outside and in the rain without protection'. Based on that, I'd be careful with import MC.

I'd look into wreckers too - lots around melbourne and I have seen many fzr's at them. Check out www.findapart.com.au . You can use either 3ln or 2kr engine (I say this based on a post by Brad indicating that he did the engine swap with minimal difficulty) - though I am sure it is easier if you get the proper engine.

Hey 1600dave,

I have just posted up a thread here with a whole heap of parts for sale and one of them just so happens to be a 3LN-1 engine. I guess the only problem is that I'm in sunny QLD and you are in VIC... The thread is here -> viewtopic.php?t=739

Just a thought...

diden't you read me post.. stay the **** away from them arseholes.. there sweet as pea's on the phone but screw you once your not looking... buy local and make sure you test before you buy.. 50000km
s is way to much for a engine anyways

look around and hunt around your local wreckers or buy a whole un-registerd bike

don't go near importMC I'm telling you

hmmmm yeah i read it mate, but did you contact them and see what they had to say about it? i'd be interested to hear their side of the story.
it could have had something to do with the freight company thats why it was wrapped in a blanket and stuff.
i spose you really should have asked more questions when buying, like could you return it etc if you were unhappy.
not saying your talking **** or anything but yeah i dont see why they pull a dodgy like that and still be in business. also its a 5,000km engine not a 50,000km engine.
cheers, and thanks for the advice, i'll think twice about them when i ring and ask be asking a few more questions now!

3ln donk into 2kr frame only as intake manifolds, therefore carbs are a bit different and there are additional mounting points on the sleeve (or the head) of the 3ln.

if you are REALLY keen these points MAY be able to be built up and modified but for the effort may as well find a 3ln motor

these mods are heaps easier to retrofit to an earlier frame rather than a later one

cheers
