ok...i bought this boat anchor 4 weeks ago from a friend that i know looks after bikes and is quite meticulous when it comes to maintenence...

for the first 3 weeks it ran like a dream...took a bit to warm it up and i suspect it was running quite rich (smelt of fuel when riding normally and was consuming a fair bit of fuel, about 140km out of a tank)...then mid last week i couldnt get it going...the bike was warm (i'd just ridden it home from work an hour earlier and was heading over to a mate's place)...the first few times i tried it was running under its own power but full throttle it was just burbling as though the exup valve hadn't opened...so i tried again...and again...and again...and eventually it wouldnt go at all...not even the burble...so i tried a push start...nothing...wouldnt go...this is with full choke on btw...

left it for a while thinking i'd flooded it...and gave it another go...nothing...asked a friend what i should do...he suggested changing the plugs and fuel filter etc...so we did that...still nothing...its definitely got spark...we checked...

totally bummed i took it to a mechanic and they said its got less than 100psi compression (which as you know is shocking) and that it needs a top-end rebuild of the engine...or it'd prolly be cheaper to get a new engine...i am staring down the barrel of a $2000 repair bill for a bike that just last week was running fine...and then oneday decided to not go anymore...they are saying the rings are frooted and the valves are worn and probably need replacing...and it needs carbie work...they also noted that the engine was noisy...now i have known that it has been noisy at idle (like a rattle from the exup area) and at around 7500rpm...but above 8000rpm it hums...really sounds like its VERY happy...they seem to think this is a major problem...ie. rebuild worthy...

i am going to be taking it to another mechanic to get a 2nd opinion but have you guys got any idea? what should i do? the bike's done 43500km and is in fairly spectacular condition otherwise...very clean and well looked after as far as i can tell...

i am totally bummed out about this as i really love this bike and just wanna ride it...but if i need to spend another $2000 (i bought the whole lot for $3500) then its kinda getting to the point where its not worth it anymore...

help appreciated...

yea sounds simular to me i got a fzr250rr 6 odd weeks ago for $3400 and was running fine next minute it not startin properly so took to a macanic and found out it needed full service and carb clean and ballance (which i did) and that it will need a valve grind at some stage (compression low) and i need of a clutch only to get home after 2 weeks to have the bike jamm up (somthing blocking it from turning over) but when all is well again (and i can afford to put gas in it) im gona ride over to to the guy who sold it to me and shoot him hehe

yeah good call...

over lunch i've managed to locate a donor engine...7500km (believed to be original) and producing around 160psi compression...maybe too much :p but its atleast better than the sub 100 mine's making :p a mere $800 for the lot including the low km instrument cluster...might be a go-er...just need to hit my mates up for a hand...beer bribing time ;)

Yeah it seems entirely easier on the fizzers to buy another motor. No-one really want s to touch them, and not many people seem to be good at them.

At least it's easy to fit..

Its not too bad if you have got a little bit of know-how. Download the fzr400 manual for a fairly rough idea of what its going to take. If you feel you can do all of that then give it a go.

I don't know if I'd be jumping to an entirely new engine just yet!!

Hell, if you're planning on doing that then you might as well just try playing with things yourself. Worst you could do is fck the engine and have to buy a new one :p

I don't think the stuff he's talking about requires a top end rebuild. Stuff I'd try on my engine if I was going to replace it anyway, and didn't know what was wrong with it:

- check valve clearances and adjust shims as necessary (this may very likely fix your problem).
- clean carbs
- check needle settings
- check float heights

You're getting spark, so you don't need to worry so much about the ignition system.

Something you might want to try: mix some 2 stroke oil with your petrol. The extra lubrication will make the engine run better, slightly leaner, and can also increase compression (if the problem is with ring wear - not so much with the valves).

Also, Barney, maybe you should try replacing the clutch yourself. It's actually quite a straight forward job, and parts will only set you back about $115.

this i would only do as a "i need to get by for a week or two, if you do this run a hot plug (???? cr7 ????) coz they are gunna foul....

get a second opinion on ya bike, it may just need to a bit of tlc. remember 1-7000rpm is only the part of the rev range that shouldn't be used while riding. rev the bugger out, it costs less than getting it running smooth down low.
