So, here’s the story… I wandered into my local bike shop a couple of weeks ago to order steering head bearings for the VTR. (As an aside, the owner texted me later and gave me a link to order them online, saying that if he got them once his markup was added, they would cost the same as getting them direct from Honda.) While I was there I noticed this beautiful bike in the corner with a sign saying “customer bike.” When I dropped off his six-pack for being a good guy with the bearings I asked about the MC22 in the corner. He explained that it had been dropped off for an assessment to see how much it would cost to get it back to registerable stage. They had gone through it and told the owner it would cost about $600 for new brakes and a carby kit. In the meantime the owner had been offered his cousins RVF400 for the cost of freighting it over. So now he was trying to decide what to do. I said that, if he was interested, I’d buy the bike as it stood. After some texting back and forth, it was agreed that I could have the bike for $800. I went back to the shop to get the VIN and take a few photos and they hooked up a battery and fired it up. And what a beautiful noise it makes with that Musari pipe! As I said in an earlier post, it’s no #kiffsta price but I’m not complaining. So I did a PPSR check, managed to find the money without dipping into the joint money (important as my wife is currently unemployed) and tonight the deal was done and this sharp little CBR250RR now sits in my shed. I know Tyga kits aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but, personally, I love it! And I’ve decided that I’m going to ignore the ridiculously low k’s and pretend it’s got maybe 35 000 k’s instead of the 12 000 it has on the clock. (Oh, and there is a good reason it was in storage for so long – the previous owner “imported it” (I’m guessing he means he bought an import bike) and then went to prison. No, I didn’t ask what for; he was a much, much harder bloke than me and I didn’t want to aggravate him. LOL) My original plan was to spend the money on what it needs, get it reregistered and sell it on but my guess is that once I’ve ridden it a few times I may choose to keep it for a while J
mate, I super proud, I would have paid $800 for that in a heartbeat. I can tell you the Tyga Performance body work is worth more than you paid for the whole bike. Now we need to work out what model MC22 you have, there are 3 models, CBR250RR(L), CBR250RR(N) and CBR250RR(R), the L and N were made from 1990 to 1994 and had 45hp on tap, the later model CBR250RR (R) was changed slightly to be compliant with Japanese law which restricted them to 40hp, this was done via changes to the cylinder head, carbs and CDI, they also sported different wiring harness and switch blocks. All 3 models had gear driven cams so you don't have issues with cam chains et al. The L and N models were not sold here new and were imports only, some of the R models are also imports, in 1996 Honda shipped a heap of R models to Australia new , there were a few minor changes to achieve Australian compliance, they were sold here until they ran out in 1999, the sale price was somewhere around $11k new. If yours is an import, I would hazard a guess that the clock has been wound back, this was common practice by the importers but not the end of the world, these are hardy little motors. The importers usually wound them back to 10,000kms, there is a shop in Melbourne call sumoto who sell a heap of them, they are have 10,000 kms on them.... seriously !!!! Can you message me the serial number on the head stem of the frame and I will tell you which model it is. Well done mate, that is a killer find and you should be super stoked with yourself. A decent runner with rego and a Tyga kit should easily fetch $3k good luck with the sale of the VTR
Hahaha! Thanks @kiffsta I should have mentioned, I'm pretty certain it's an L, made in 1990, based on the excellent history you posted some time ago
Nice one! I like the modern look of the Tyga fairings on the MC22, it makes it look like a more recent bike. The musarri is a good pipe, had one on my Ninja 250R. And the price you paid is excellent
holy crap nice bike, great price too like @kiffsta said I would have paid that much for it too. the fairing kit alone is worth more then that... very very nice buy..
you can always check your rear sub frame for the sticker , open your rear seat, look down between the black plastic part and your fairings and you should see a white sticker on the RH side with the model written there
get 2 fuel rails, ECU, wiring loom and fuel pump from the newer 250 twins and turn it into a fuel injected inline 4 250 cc, then lower the compression ratio so not to blow the engine and turbo charge or super charge it. Also run a wet NOS system... that is if you really want to put the time and money into something like that... oooooorrrrrrr just buy a litre bike... but then you wont have the bragging rights of having the only inline 4 250cc fuel injected with turbo/ super charger in Australia... Now I have spouted a bunch of nonsense @Phil is right it doesn't get any better.
Hmmm, @Tim_ , that all sounds like a lofty ambition, a ton of work and a bucket-load of cash I don't have. How about I'll just stick to doing the things I have to do to get it over the pits and then I'll ride it. Does that sound like a fair compromise? But, yes, i'm pretty stoked about having an unrestricted version
LOL, thats why I added the "spouting nonsense" part because for someone to do it would be nonsense...lol
Hang on @Tim....can we not dream a little It is our last bastion (dream) that hasn't yet been taxed....rumor has it our politicians are looking at it !!!
Hahahaha @Tim_ and @Phil, I suspect we're having one of those conversations that would have worked much better all around if we had our fingers wrapped around beers instead of keyboards I'd invite you round to see if I'm right but I reckon that Perth is probably a bit of a longer ride than you'll usually manage on a Friday afternoon. (Although, if you did own a fuel-injected, turbo, NOS-fed beast, maybe it's not too far after all.... LOL!)
Personally I hate the tiger kit but only because of the cost and the fact that I appreciate mechanical performance over "looks" mods, why spend 2000$ on a fairing kit with a blown shock??? To me if someone thinks it looks good that's just a bonus on what would be the most cost effective super sports lams bike available. That mixed with the reliability and excess of replacement parts it makes for a very wise learner bike. After viewing quite a few and seeing a handful of the common problems I would tackle the electricals followed by the forks and brakes among the obvious general service of fluids, plugs and filters. If someone was new was to ask for riding tips with the mc22 I would tell them not to under estimate how quick it can pick up speed, if your front brakes arent up to scratch it can be a bit full on for a new rider. In corners there hasn't been a time yet when jumping on the front brakes hasn't allowed me to recover from going in too fast. I would have thought it would cause under steer but it appears it just works for one reason or another.
The only things you need for the Tyga kit is the front cowl and the tail. Still uses the lower cowls, seat and subframe. My MC22 with the Tyga kit gets a lot of attention when I used to take it out. I believe it's based off an 04ish CBR600RR, and also looks similar to the RCV211. Nonetheless, I would have bought that bike without thinking twice. If I were you I'd flip it. An easy $2k at least.
Yeah, @KICKERMAN360 , today I came home from work and switched the battery over from VTR and started the CBR. As I listened to that great noise I thought "How could I bring myself to sell this?". Then I discovered that one of the front calipers had seized and the bike won't roll any more and thought "Yeah, I can see how I might be selling this." I guess it will all depend on a/how much trouble I have getting the CBR back on the road and b/how I feel when I ride it Still, that's a problem for future me - tomorrow is all about replacing the fork seals and steering head bearings on the VTR so I have at least one bike that can be ridden
