With regular servicing and oil changes at the recommended intervals, how many kilometers do forums members think you could get out of one of these engines? (clearly forget about thrashed engines!) What parts of the bike or engine do you think would need work on first as the mileage steadily increases?
tough one as it really depends on how well they are looked after, I think 120k plus isn't unreasonable , all comes down to how well its looked after, if valve clearances etc are done. Tough to accurately answer
How long is a piece of string ? If we take an FZR250 for example ..... It would be interesting to find a 1 or 2 owner FZR in Japan that has been ridden 'regurlarly' ..... to see how many real Ks are on it and how its performing if regular service and maintenance has been kept up. On the opposite end , we have the grey imported ones here in Australia .... 99% chance of odometer wound back , owned by countless mindless numptys that have no clue about repairs , maintenance etc, except to do stupid and unqualified 'repairs' and 'upgrades' just so they ride the 'coolest' and 'fastest' LAMS bike around. Then , after they are discarded , they turn up as $500 dungers ...... and thankfully , most of the time , they end up falling into ours hands and with a bit of work and some new bits they become a half decent rideable bike again .... and ready for maybe another 50 or 100 thousand Ks .... if we dont die of frustration first.
If the bike is ridden on a highway, keeping the engine at constant temp, then be regulary serviced, the engine 'should' be good for around the 100,000Km mark. Now, if you do 30Km each way to work x five days a week = about 15,500 per year. So assuming that you do a bit more, say 20,000 a year, that is five years before you would have to think about repairs.
Thanks guys. All interesting answers and appreciate the insight. Having never pulled a motorbike engine apart yet it looks like I have got a few years up my sleeve to learn a thing or two and one day know a lot more about valve clearances. Stoked to have the forum here to help.
