Hi all happy new year I have just found a 3 mm hole on my petrol tank on my zx2r Is there anything that I can get to fix it
Whereabouts on the tank is it? ..... maybe post a photo of it ? If its a rust hole then I would be taking a close look at the whole tank inside and out.
sand off paint, tap in with small ball peen hammer, give a tinning layer of solder, find some gal sheeting, copper or brass and tin and sweat on, solder around edges, sand down high spots ..fill and paint. takes longer but is permanent.
Just going to refurb the tank Sanded it all down to the bare metal and found some more pin hole on the other side at the corner Trying to upload pic but not letting me
Yea thats why I mentioned having a very close look all over...especially with the original hole being that size (your pics may need downsizing .... like under 400KB)
silver solder brazed on works really well - I had a tank done decades ago, it never leaked again, well not while I had the bike anyway
Fill with water or CO2 if your going to use oxy torch. I tried to weld a bracket to a car tank years ago, tank had been sitting empty for months, and as I waved the torch over the outlet it lit the fumes and the tank went off with a flame like a jet engine spinning across the yard. It ended up against the fence looking like an inflated paper bag. Took me two hours to get it back into a shape resembling the original. Be careful.
there is a product you can get from manufacture permatex, its basically a 3 stage product. The first being putty to fill the hole, then a resin mating and covered over with an epoxy resin (black). have used it a few weeks ago purchased from supercheap auto store cost $39.00 came with sand paper as well, so far it is working well. refer picture.
There was a great artcicle in this months classic motorcycle mechanics from the UK (should be in the local newsagent next month) on tank repairs. Used solder puddling technique and looks good especially if its in a spot where you can't see it. They did recommend cleaning the tank out overnight with detergent and water to remove the residue and also see if any other holes appear. Well worth the read (and it makes it all seem a piece of p*ss). Also I did a google search on motorcycle tank repairs and found at least one guy that on further research checked out OK (in Queensland) so if you want it done rather than do it yourself try that one
