You know what i say to this? I say F*ck you. You obviously cant and/or dont ride in the manner i describe. Quite the opposite is in fact true. If you're using correct cornering technique there is a hell of a lot in reserve when cornering. I bet i could knee slide round a corner as much as 30% slower than you could from the impression your comments make. You've just ousted yourself as the guy who comments on things he knows nothing about. I would love a show of hands who in this forum knee-slides round corners. Anywhere. Street or race-track. I bet i could do a 10minute search on google for f*cks sake and find more pros that back me up than you could find whores in a crack house. Do you know why these guys scrape their pegs before they scrape their knees? No? Well i do. Its because they arent using their body weight correctly in a corner so instead they go faster and faster thinking thats what is required to scrape a knee when in actual fact they need to move their body. Ive raced bikes at a competitive NATIONAL level for at least 7years and i say you can go get f*cked. Nuff said. Im out. Anybody wants to learn how to scrape a knee, google it. Or even PM me if you want. PEACE!

Id also like to say that id love to see a quote where i describe any type of "dangerous" riding techniques. I learned to slide knees from Andrew Stroud. Personally. Him and me, one on one. Jared Love also happens to be an aquaintance of mine and has given me numerous pointers over the years. Oh yea, and the only crochety old blokes blasting past me are the ones having a real good time while we're all out for a chillaxed sunday ride over the Rimutaka's. So like i said. Go f*ck yourself.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

This whole thread is pretty funny, as soon as i saw 'knee down' knew there was gonna be arguments. I havn't even tried to get my knee down yet, but the way i see it theres a time and place for everything. This could be an empty parking lot or somewhere away from most traffic, either way. Be safe and have fun.

EXACTLY!!! Be safe! Thats the whole point! Getting a knee down isnt dangerous unless you MAKE IT DANGEROUS!! And i resent the people who implied otherwise. My friends and I all ride safe, but many of us knee-down regularly, and a big birdy to anyone who says otherwise.

Ok, the mod stick gets waved. People are getting excited; everyone back off for a breather.

I acknowledge conflict of interest in that I'm part of the discussion, but I will lock this thread if it gets further out of hand.

If you look at that vid it shows why I say it is dangerous.

Imagine having a pothole or divit in the road that you landed your knee into.

Fastfizza I personally think that you are getting too carried away, if you think it is a great idea to ride around the land of the long white cloud with your knee on the road then go ahead, don't go fighting with people that don't want to do it.

he isnt fighting with people who dont want to do it.. they are saying the person who started the thread and wants to know how to do it properly and safely is an idiot for wanting to..
its good fun on a track. and a very useful thing to know how to do properly if you misjudge a corner, so surely its only good to know how (and when) to do it??

Well, Fastfizza, this isn't barracks, so there's no need to carry on like a cry-baby. Pop your dummy back in.

Not sure how bad my riding is, but I do race in PCRA and StGeorge Cup...

Track riding is for the track, not the road. And if you're putting your knee down with 'plenty in reserve', then you are a show pony. It's quite simply pointless.

go practice on a track, not on the road.

    OK Guys

The old knee down trick is ok in the right place with the right gear. I used to watch Mick Doohan racing the 500GP bikes and at the odd time he saved a big slide with the brute strength of his knee when the front end let go and he was able to keep it upright (well, maybe 45 degrees or so) with smoke coming off the front tyre.

Doing it on the road without a slider you risk driving your knee joint into your hip or your foot and be crippled for life. However people will be people and do what they feel comfortable with.

While it is good to have a healthy discussion, sometimes things go a bit far. I think we will have to agree do disagree here, and let the heated discussion end at that.

    Cheers
    DAVE

Also have to remember Doohan was a professional, OP is obviously asking for advice and hes getting hazardous answers.

A public road is nothing like a race track in terms of surface quality, heck most racers go knees down on the painted "glass like" surface when cornering. If you wanna use a knee and get low around a corner, do so, just keep the knee a fair distance from the ground cause all it needs is one hole/gutter/glassbottle to **** you up.

Every instructor i've had strongly advised going knees down, but they also said it wasnt illegal. So isnt going for a ride in my smilie boxers and helm, but i dont.

well i saw a bloke on a gixxer about 4 months ago very luckly avoid a horrorable crash off a 120foot cliff.
he went round the corner which everyone misjudges because it has an opposit camber and its longer than it looks as you come into it.
the back started to slip out so he leaned into it and stuck out his knee down and managed to stop all hell breaking loose as it got jammed against the curb and went round against the curb. bit later i was speaking to him and he said he hant been that scared in his life.

hey guys! just checked if my question had got any replies and first of all i would like to thank everyone for there input. id like to say that when i was practicing i was on a round about but before i get a lashing from anyone it was in a new subdivision with emty plots not a person in sight or mother with there pram for that matter. no im not 100 kg fulla who shouldnt be attemting this. im about 5'9" abd 80kg so i should be able to achieve knee down...

and no i havent tried again yet as it has been pretty wet here in newzealand. and before we have any more sheep shagging jokes id like to let you know i live in the city not on the farm!

i understand that riding is, before anything else, about being safe, however as it had been mentioned getting knee down can be a skill that would save your but if you find yourself speeding towards a corner where you cant slow down without locking up and you only option is to turn and bail! (in saying this i mean having good body position not nessarly haveing the knee down but you get the point).

as for pot holes and getting your knee stuck in one personally i think any person in there right mind on the track or otherwise would check the corners he was attempting to drag knee at before he attemted anything! i mean this goes without saying! i dont know anyone who would be that stupid and id imagine if they were they would crash well before the find themselfs in that situation that they could even do this complex manuver.

again thankyou everyone for your imput. and ill let you know if and when i can do this. looking at youtube vids as we speak! cant wait to get out there!!!!!

Its not only potholes/debris you have to look for, as thats only gonna effect your left hand side.

Turning right will present a bigger problem, caged monkeys!

Your are smaller object knees down, and your noggin will be in the way of a FWD's right headlight.

Im not saying dont do it, just be VERY careful.

Im a L plater, so it doesnt really matter what i say (1.5 years sports riding experience)

I think South Australia or Victoria installed metal sheeting on their side road guard thingies so they can stop riders being hooked on a post when they come off.

    Huh.

I was meaning white post, made of wood, painted white, with a reflector on top.

Some have been changed to flexi posts. Thats not for bike riders, thats so they can be run over and not need replacing.
