So there I was putting the last bits and pieces back on (not including fairings) the bike after having replaced the head gasket, all happy that I can finally ride again.
I go to start her up, nothing.... nothing for a while... alright give it a push start for the hell of it.... starts up, sweet go to do a turn at the bowl of my court, and it decided to take control of the throttle (in a way) and take off. I pulled the clutch in and went to brake hard so I didn't hit the gutter and ended up laying her down...

Good thing the fairings weren't on Although my mirror and windscreen are alittle out of shape and my front brake lever broke off (otherwise, only a few scratches here and there).

pick her up check this and that, then decide to try and start the bike again. same thing as before, nothing for ages, go to push start nothing again.

So I take in back into my driveway, and have a lunch break, come back out play with the plugs, they were all firing. so tried starting some more, eventually it started up......
Only problem, it would start increasing revs, no choke, no throttle input. Did this a couple of times, checked the choke and throttle cables, seem perfectly fine. Start again and see how high it goes, stopped around 5-6k rpm and sounded like horse manure. Play with plugs again.... start again, up towards 10k rpm and seeemed it would go higher but I didn't think it was a good idea to let it go higher.

Found out why it sounded crud, one of the plugs wasn't firing properly or at all, I think the cables need replacing and the plugs too for the hell of it.

But as for the bike wanting to redline itself..... I have no idea?!?!
Anyone have any clue whatsoever?

I'll be going down to Torquay with some friends from boxing day to new years, I was... heh.... planning on taking my bike..

rpm is related to how much air was let into the intake, which draws the fuel from the carb into the engine. Maybe look between the airbox all the way to the throttle plates/linkages for any clues?

Air leak? like Tbone seid. Did you move the rubber manifolds at all. On my cb 900 it did this and I had to get some new ones.

I'd check the cable routing for throttle and choke.

Then spray some Ether (engine start) or WD-40 around the carb boots, both sides (airbox and engine) while trying to start or after it is running. Either way will work.

Well, I figured out the problem.....

Didn't tighten up the Carb boots properly, hence letting air in.

Now to get a brake lever and I'm back on the road!

Bizz,

any tips on replacing the head gasket - planning to do it this weekend (pick up the gasket in a couple of days) and then into it. do you think it can be done over a weekend and does the engine need to come out.

any suggestions appreciated

thanks

No the engine doesn't need to come out, and you can easily do it in a weekend.
One thing to look out for, if you don't have a cam chain cutter (I didn't) you have to make sure that the cam chain doesn't, and i mean DOESN'T fall into the crank case, even a little, its a biartch to get back up took me like an hour or 2 to get it back.

If you follow the fzr400 manual there's no problem, although I'm not sure if there's a difference in torques between the fzr400 and the fzr250 engines. I hope not because I torqued everything to the fzr400 torques from the manual.

It took me a day to do this myself.

Oh and does anyone know where I can get myself a torque wrench that does 1Nm and up??? I went to Alltools (Protools) in Croydon and they had one for $249. Well i said maybe next time for that price.

BIZ, we need a step by step instruction. I am going to take the head off mine shortly.
I presume fairings off, drain water, radiator off, valve cover off.
Tank cover off?? yes/no.
Carbs off where? at head or boots??
Exhaust off.
Cams out.
Head studs out. Are they hex head or allen key??
What have I missed??

the torque wrench that does 1Nm and up for $250 seams to be a good price... at those settings you need precision... I have one that does about 3?? and up and it cost me $100 a long time ago...

I've half finished a write up, will post in the how to section.
Also, I will add a bit to the timing topic that's there.

I didn't take any photos unfortunately, so I hopefully have described things well enough.

And I guess I'll have to save some money to get that torque wrench.. awww
