if u got something strong above you..u could always tie rope or wateva around the steering column or something solid..and lift it from there...similar to wat I use.

Hey don't know if you solved your problem yet but I only just joined this forum and read your question now. I had the exact same thing happen to my bike; speedo not working and no idea how to get the front wheel off the ground by myself.

Anyway, I got the front wheel up by simply leaning the bike further over on its side stand. This is easy and you can do it alone. Just balance the bike on the real wheel and side stand - just tie a rope to a post or something and tie the other end to the top of the forks. This should hold the bike so the front wheel is off the ground. Just make sure it is well balanced and secured before starting work.

As for the speedo. Using a torch, see if the bit where the cable plugs in turns when you spin the front wheel. If it doesn't turn, then the problem is definately in the wheel end of the speedo.

Now take the wheel off and remove the speedo drive. See if you can turn it. Does the bit where the cable plugs in turn? If it doesn't turn then you need a new speedo drive. If it does turn, then the problem is probably with a circular part inside the wheel which has two little lugs that plug into the speedo drive.

What usually happens is that somebody has removed the wheel at some stage, and when they replaced it, the lugs weren't lined up properly with the speedo drive. The lugs get pushed in and the circular disc becomes bent and wont engae the speedo drive.

Have a look at the lugs and see if they look as though they have been pushed in. If they have, then it is possible to use some pliers to pull the two lugs back out a bit so that they can lock into the drive (although it's probably better to try get a new part). You can take the disc thingy out to work on it if you want.

    Hope this helps.

Another, slightly dodgy way is to do what i've been doing.

    Step 1: Aquire milk crate
Step 2: Aquire assistant to sit on bike
Step 3: Lift bike and rest collector part of the exhaust(where the exup valve resides) on the crate
Step 4: Get assistant to balance bike for you(in my case...my mum :p )
Step 5: Go nuts and dont hurt yourself.
