Hey All Many thanks for the fed back. By the look of things, the bolts have been damaged many moons ago. The thread pattern has been butchered by previous owner. I can get the bolt to bite about 3/4 of the way in, certainly not enough to hold. Doing some research yesterday, think a helicoil on each will be do the job. Because the fins on the engine cover some of the area, this could be easily missed, I certainly did. Thanks again guys for your help. Phil
So its the internal thread in the head thats damaged :-\ I thought u meant the outside thread on the stud that was the problem........ :icon_scratch:  ... good luck with it  ;D
Put the engine in, pull the engine out. Seems to be the current state of affairs. Decided to get the mechanic to drill out and fit 4 helicoils for the exhaust. With a little luck I will get this bike on the road soon. Phil
i used to use a kit called wurth - timeserts in the uk these were a metal insert much stronger than heli coils once you fitted them and put thte spreader tap thro them they never came out again i used them on camshaft caps and rocker covers and exhausts gave the kit to my brother when i moved here i should have brought it with me great kit if you can find any here in oz
Hi Phil, I’m new to this site; Jason from Redline got me on to it and told me about your bike. He said you may be able to help me out? Do you know anyone that can do a crank rebuild on my 74 GT 250, Jason doesn’t do them. Thanks Pete
G'day GTPete 1st up welcome to the forum, good of my mate Jason. Off hand I don't know but let me make a few enquiries and I will get back to you. Will be in touch. Phil
Some real progress was achieved today on the X7. Motor went in without to much trouble. Got everything buttoned up fairly promptly. Carbs were way out, got them sorted??? or so I thought. After priming the oil pump and a little calibrating, the throttle still did not feel right. Off with the tank only to discover that a cable tie was holding the throttle half open, rectified that issue but then discovered that all previous adjustment were out by a country mile. Did manage to get the engine running, sounded sweet but decided to replace throttle and oil pump cable, this means resetting everything once again but should clear up problems encountered today. :BangHead: My thanks to Chris for helping me out, think we are getting closer mate! Stay tuned folks, we are making progress  Phil
Fitted new throttle cables today, however a couple of leaks have appeared. 1 out of the oil pump, 2nd from the neutral switch. Turns out a gasket is missing, make one tomorrow. Think it's coming together, each day gets a little closer to completion. Phil
It was a very good day. The oil leaks have been sorted. the neutral switch only needed a new rubber O ring, sorted! Fitted a new hose to the oil pump, sorted! Chris and I got the carbs calibrated and the oil pump, kicked her over and she fired up. Only issues left to fix is clutch adjustment, fixing the front brake switch which is my fault having cut a wire many moons ago, and she is DONE. Been a long time coming, light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter!! Phil
